Putting it all together
One characteristic of an epic hero that Beowulf possesses is battling
supernatural forces. First, Beowulf boasts to King Hrothgar about what
makes him capable and worthy to take on Grendel. He says, “I battled and
bound five beasts, raided a troll-nest and in the night-sea slaughtered sea-
brutes” (Beowulf 420-422). Second, Beowulf proves his boast true and
defeats Grendel. He gives Grendel a fatal wound by splitting his sinews,
crushing his bones, and ripping his shoulder and entire arm from his body
(Beowulf 812-814). These feats serve to qualify Beowulf as a contender
and ultimate victor against Grendel who has been plaguing Hrothgar and
the Danish people for twelve years. His possession of superhuman strength
and courage allow him to abolish the threat of evil and showcases how a
hero steps up in the time of need regardless of the potential threat or
