LOGICAL FALLACIES
Review
WARM UP (5 MIN.)

 Instructions:
 Search for the answers to these
questions:
1.What does the word “fallacy” mean?
2.What is a logical fallacy?
3.Why is learning about logical fallacies
important?
WHAT IS A LOGICAL
FALLACY?
 A fallacy is an error of reasoning.
These are flawed statements that
often sound true

 Logical fallacies are often used to

strengthen an argument, but if the
reader detects them the argument can
backfire, and damage the writer’s
credibility
ORIGINS

 The word “fallacy” derives from the

Latin word fallere meaning, “to
deceive, to trip, to lead into error or
to trick.” The word also derives
from the Greek phelos, meaning
“deceitful.”
WHY STUDY LOGICAL
FALLACIES?

 It is important to develop logical fallacy

detection skills in your own writing, as well
as others’.
TYPES OF LOGICAL
FALLACIES

The following slides will

briefly explain 15 fallacious
arguments.
We’ll divide them into 3 parts
and study 5 logical fallacies
each time 
min.) Instructions:
1.
1. The class will be divided Bandwagon
into 5 groups. Approach 2. Slippery
2. Each group will be “Appeal to Slope
assigned a logical Popularity”
fallacy.
3. Two things are needed:
a definition and an
example for the logical
fallacy tackled.
4. The final product should
be posted on this

TYPES OF LOGICAL Let’s recap!
FALLACIES 
(5-10 min.)

- 1. “Bandwagon Approach”
- “It must be cool because everyone is
doing it…
- “90 percent of computer users choose
Macs”
- (sometimes called Appeal to
Popularity)
TYPES OF LOGICAL
FALLACIES
- 2.“Slippery Slope” - a fallacious
argument built on the supposition that a
small step will lead to a larger chain of
events
“If you don’t stop smoking, then you are going to
start shooting heroin.”
3) APPEALS TO
AUTHORITY
 Using a celebrity or authority figure’s
name to support an issue which if not
really his or her expertise.
 “Katie Perry thinks the killer should be
pardoned.” FALSE AUTHORITY .
 Often called.. . Using a suspicious,
incredible source to defend a conclusion
TYPES OF LOGICAL
FALLACIES
 4.) Card Stacking
 Considered a fallacy of omission
- Material is simply left out or taken
out of context, ignoring evidence
that doesn’t support your opinion
5) HASTY
GENERALIZATIONS
 This is the chief error in reasoning! – a
type of inductive reasoning – conclusions
made through insufficient evidence
Ex: The last two mass murderers were
from Michigan. Obviously, people from
Michigan are dangerous.
PRACTICE TIME 
1- PAIR WORK – PRACTICE (8
 MIN.)
Mention the type of the logical fallacy in the
following examples and provide evidence for your
answer.
1. Everybody in our family goes to Georgetown for
undergrad, so it only makes sense that you do too.
2. It's okay to cheat on exams because everybody
does it.
3. I've met two people in Greece so far, and they
were both nice to me. So, all the people I will meet
in Greece will be nice to me.
4. “This interview includes only the opinions of the
supporters of George Bush.”
5. Firemen support Jones as the best choice for our
town's future.
6. If students are required to wear uniforms to
school, they'll do less shopping at local clothing
3- GROUP PRACTICE (8 MIN.)

4- GROUP WORK (10 MIN.)

1. Find examples for the five fallacies

discussed in class in advertisements,
newspaper or magazine articles, or real-life
examples.

2. Put your findings in a catchy PowerPoint

Presentation.

3. Present it in class and ask your peers .

5- ROLEPLAYING TIME (10
MIN.)
 We need five volunteers (or more)
to act out a logical fallacy the
teacher will assign to them.
 Make sure that you act it out well
so that your peers can guess
correctly! 
