New in this lesson


Word Processing Tool: A programme which allows you to write, edit and print different
documents.

Document: A type of file which shows written information and/or images and sometimes charts
and tables.

Front Screen: The screen which first opens on launch. It gives access to the different actions a
user can take.

Caps Lock: A button on the computer keyboard which changes the letters to upper case (capital
letters).

Cursor: The flashing vertical line that shows your place in a document.

Selecting/highlighting: Clicking on the text you wish to edit.

Font: A set of type which shows words and numbers in a particular style and size.

Opening a new document will look like this. There are some key areas we need to
be aware of:
Document name: This will show here – currently it
has the default ‘Untitled document’ as it hasn’t
been saved yet.

Menu Bar: This


contains drop

user can perform.

Icons: These

actions such as on this and drag the

undo/redo. (scroll) or use the arrow
keys.

Using Caps Lock and Shift Slide 8

Understanding how to use Caps Lock and Shift is very important. Try it out by writing a
short sentence with your name in.

Pressing ‘Caps Lock’ will


make all the letters ‘upper
case’ capital until it is pressed
again.

capital until it is depressed.

The cursor is the flashing vertical line that shows your place in a document.

It can be moved by clicking on the place where you wish to


type.

It can also be moved by using the arrow keys on a


keyboard.

You can select a character or text to edit for example if you wanted to make all the
selected text a particular font or you wanted to delete it.

Double-clicking on a word will select the whole


word.

Pressing the mouse button down and dragging


will select the text dragged over.

Clicking somewhere and using the arrow keys to get


to the start position of the selection…. then holding
down the shift key and using the arrow keys to get to
the end of the selection will select the text.

What is wrong with the formatting in this text? Open up the file in Google Docs, can you
format it correctly?

One font or font family used throughout a single


document – switching between lots of different
fonts is hard to read.
Use underlining sparingly; look at the lines
underlined and blue in the text, what do they look
like?

Use bold for titles and key words.
