Introduction

Definition of terms:
 Formula - a mathematical rule expressed in a set of numbers and
letters. It can also be defined as a concise way of expressing
information symbolically.
Example:
 Expression - The definition of an expression in math is a
statement composed of terms and operations. The terms may be
constant (numbers), or variables with coefficients. The
operations may be addition, subtraction, multiplication, or
division.
Example: 2x + 3y
 Function - Expresses a relationship between two or more
variables.
Example: y = 2x
 Equation: a mathematical statement that shows two amounts
are equal using mathematical symbols.
3
Example: 3x - 3 = 15
1. Averages

Finding mean for ungrouped data

• Formula

Example: The marks obtained by 8 students in a class test are 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 10, 11,
and19. Use the mean formula and find out what is the mean of the marks obtained by
the students?
Solution:
• Total marks obtained by 8 students in class test = (12 + 14 + 16 +
18 + 20 + 10 + 11 + 19) = 120
Using the mean formula,
Mean = (Sum of terms) ÷ (Total numbers of terms) = 120/8 = 15
• Therefore, the mean of marks obtained by 8 students is 15.

2. Percentages

i. Calculating x as a percentage of y
Formula:

Example:

Solution:

ii. Calculating percentage change:

Formula:

6
3.Ratio and proportion

• Ratio formula: then the formula for ratio is defined as;

a : b ⇒ a/b
where a and b could be any two quantities..

• Example : Find the simplest form of 80:75

using the ratio formula.
• Solution:
• The GCF of 80 and 75 is 5.
We divide each term in the ratio by 5.
We get 80/5:75/5 = 16:15.
• Answer: Thus, the ratio of 80:75 in the simplest
form is 16:15

7
4.Probability

Calculating probability

Formula:

Example: There are 6 pillows in a bed, 3 are red, 2 are yellow and 1 is
blue. What is the probability of picking a yellow pillow?
Solution: The probability is equal to the number of yellow pillows in the bed
divided by the total number of pillows,
i.e. 2/6 = 1/3.

5.Sequences,expression and formulae

Formula for finding nth term:

Question: If 4,7,10,13,16,19,22……is a sequence, Find: Common

difference,nth term,21st term
Solution: Given sequence is, 4,7,10,13,16,19,22……
a) The common difference = 7 – 4 = 3
b) The nth term of the arithmetic sequence is denoted by the term Tn
and is given by Tn = a + (n-1)d, where “a” is the first term and d is the
common difference.
Tn = 4 + (n – 1)3 = 4 + 3n – 3 = 3n + 1
c) 21st term as: T21 = 4 + (21-1)3 = 4+60 = 64 .

6. Area, perimeter and volume
i. Area of rectangles and perimeter of rectangle
Formula

Example: The length of rectangular field is 12m and width is 10m.

Find the area of the field along with its perimeter.
Solution:
• Given, Length = 12m
• Width = 10m
• Therefore, Area = length x width = 12 x 10 = 120 sq.m.
• Perimeter = 2 (length + width) = 2 x (12 + 10) = 2 x 22 = 44 m.

10
ii. Area and perimeter of a square

Formula:

Example: If the length of the side of a square is 11cm. Then find its area and also find the total
length of its boundary.

Solution:
Given, length of the side, a = 11 cm
Area = a^2 = 112 = 121 sq.cm

Total length of its boundary, Perimeter = 4a = 4 x 11 = 44 sq.cm.

11
iii. Area and perimeter of a triangle

Formula

Example: What is the area of a triangle with base b = 3 cm and height h = 4

cm?
• Using the formula,
• Area of a Triangle, A = 1/2 × b × h
• = 1/2 × 4 (cm) × 3 (cm)
• = 2 (cm) × 3 (cm)
• = 6 cm2

12
iv. Area and perimeter of circle

Formula:

• Example:
• If the radius of a circle is 21cm. Find its area and circumference.

• Solution:
• Given, radius = 21cm
• Therefore, Area = π × r2
• A = 22/7 × 21 × 21
• A = 1386 sq.cm.
• Circumference, C = 2πr
• C = 2 x 22/7 x 21 = 132 cm

13
v. Area of a parallelogram

Formula:

Example:

Solution:

14
vi. Area of a trapezium

Formula

Example: Find the area of the trapezium below.

Solution

15
vii. Volume of cubes and cuboids

Formula

Example: If the length, breadth and height of a

cuboid are 5 cm, 3 cm and 4 cm, then find its volume. Example: If the length of the side of
Given, Length (l) = 5 cm, Breadth (b) = 3 cm and Height the cube is 6 cm, then find its volume.
(h) = 4 cm Given, side length = 6 cm
Volume of cube = side3
Volume of cuboid = l × b × h V = 63
V = 216 cubic cm
V=5×3×4

V = 60 cubic cm

PIE- CHART FORMULA
The pie chart formula is given as
• (Given Data/Total value of Data) × 360°

Example:

•Cricket = 17/100 × 200 = 34 students

•Football = 25/100 × 200 = 50 students
•Badminton = 12/100 × 200 = 24 students
•Hockey = 5/100 × 200 = 10 students
•Other = 41/100 × 200 = 82 students
