Inverse

Functions
Tr Keena

Learning Objective:
• Recognize the notation for the inverse function
• Evaluate and find the inverse function
Introduction

• Inverse function is its reverse.

• The inverse of the function f(x) is written as f –

1
(x).

How to find inverse

functions?
1. rewrite the function, replacing f(x) with y
2. interchange x and y
3. rearrange the equation to make y the
subject.
Example 1: If f(x) = x + 2, find
f−1(x).
1. rewrite the function, replacing f(x) with y
2. interchange x and y
3. rearrange the equation to make y the
subject.

Calculation f(x) = x + 2
y=x+2
x=y+2
y=x−2

So f −1
(x) = x −

Example 2: If g(x) = 2x – 3, find
g−1(x).
1. rewrite the function, replacing g(x) with
y
2. interchange x and y
3. rearrange the equation to make y the
subject.
Calculation g(x) = 2x – 3
y = 2x – 3
x = 2y – 3
x +3
y =
2

So g−1(x) =
Example 3: If g(x) = 2x – 3, find
g−1(2).
1. First calculate the inverse function g−1(x)
2. Substitute the value inside x

Calculation
g(x) = 2x – 3  g−1(x) =

So, g−1(2) =
=
