CHAPTER 1: The Computer System

Lesson 1
Fundamentals of
Computers
What Computers Can Do

You have learned that

computers help you do your
work easily and quickly. Do you
still remember what they can
do when you use them?
A computer can help
you solve problems
1+1=2
2+2=4
in math.
It can help you add, subtract,
multiply, or divide numbers, You
can use the calculator program on
a computer to do these tasks.
A computer can help
you create documents.
You can make letters,
reports, or other documents
for your assignments or
projects. You can keep
records and files too.
A computer can help you
listen to music, play games,
or watch movies.
A computer has programs
that allow you to do these
activities.
A computer can
store a huge
amount of data.
You can keep pictures,
letters, images, song lists,
movies, and games in its
memory, where these kinds
of data can be stored for a
long time unless you erase
or delete them.
A computer can be
connected to a network.
A computer can be exchange data and communicate with another
computer. A network allows computers to share information. The
internet, for example, is a very large network of computers.
What Computers Cannot Do

You have also learned that

there are some things that a
computer cannot do. Do you
remember why it cannot do
such things?
A computer cannot think and
produce data by itself.

It needs a user. A user is someone

who will give the data it needs. The
user will also provide the
instructions that the computer
needs to process the given data. It
will then produce the needed
output.
A computer cannot determine
whether the type of instructions
entered into it is right or wrong.
When a computer receives data, it
uses sets of instructions to process
the data. It cannot detect errors in
the data. Therefore, if a user enters
incorrect input, the computer will
also give incorrect or
unrecognizable output.
A computer cannot repair
itself.
When your computer stops
working, there could be
something wrong with it. You
will have to ask a person who
knows how to fix computers to
check it.
A computer cannot work
without electricity.
A computer is an
electronic device,
hence, it needs
electricity in order to
work. It is essential
for all computers. Ask
an elder to help you
plug the computer
into its proper outlet.
