Computer – Hardware
Components
Introduction
Hardware – Types
• Hardware refers to the tangible components or the Hardware
machinery that makes up a computer.

• External Hardware
 These are the devices that are attached to the
computer box into one of the ports of the computer. External Internal
 For example – Mouse, Keyboard, MICR, Speaker and Hardware Hardware
Printer.

• Internal Hardware
 These are the components that are within the Input Devices
computer box. They are built-in, attached or added
as expansion cards to the motherboard of the
computer.
 For example – Fan, Motherboard, etc.

Let us learn about external hardware in detail.
External Hardware – Input Devices
Input Devices
• In computers, an input device is a piece
of equipment used to provide data and
control signals to an information
processing system, such as a computer
or information appliance.

• It accepts data from the user.

• Examples of input devices are –

keyboard, mouse, MICR, etc.

• Let us learn about them in detail.

External Hardware – Output Devices
Output Devices
• Any peripheral that accepts data
from a computer and prints,
projects, or reproduces it is known
as an output device.

• It presents the information from the

computer.

• Examples of input devices are –

speaker, printer, etc.

• Let us learn about them in detail.

Output Devices
A printer produces a hard copy of the processed
1
data such as documents and photographs. The
computer sends the image data to the printer,
which then recreates the image on a paper.
Printers are of mainly two types – Impact and
Non-Impact printers.
Impact Printer - It is a printer that works by direct
2
contact of an ink ribbon with paper. A metal or
plastic head strikes the ink ribbon, whereby the
ribbon is pressed against the paper.
Non-Impact Printer – A printer which prints
without physically hitting the paper are called
Printer non-impact printers. All printers nowadays are
non-impact printers.
Output Devices
Speakers are used to connect to a computer to
1
generate sound, which are one of the most
common output devices. Some speakers are
designed to connect with any kind of sound
system, while some can be hooked up only with
computers.
With the computer speaker, the
2
computer's sound card creates a signal
that is used to produce sound. The
primary objective of speakers is to offer
audio output for the listener. The
electromagnetic waves are converted
Speaker into sound waves through the speaker
as they are transducers.
Output Devices
A projector is an output device that takes images
1
generated by a computer or Blu-ray player and
reproduce them by projection onto a screen, wall,
or another surface.

Projectors can produce either still (slides) or

2
moving images (videos). A projector is often about
the size of a toaster and weighs only a few
pounds.

The most common type of projector used

3
today is called a Video Projector. Video
projectors are digital replacements for earlier
Projector types of projectors such as slide projectors
and overhead projectors.
External Hardware – Storage Devices
Storage Devices
• A storage device is any type of computing
hardware that is used for storing, porting
or extracting data files and objects.

• Storage devices can hold and store

information both temporarily and
permanently.

• They may be internal or external.

• A storage device may also be known as a

storage medium depending on whether it
is seen as discrete in nature.
Conclusion
• Hardware can be defined as
the physical devices and
equipment’s of the computer that
are required for the computer to
start and function.

• Typical examples of hardware

devices are keyboard, monitor,
RAM, processor, etc.

• In conclusion, hardware and

software are required to make a
computer system to operate
effectively. Hardware is the
physical components while the
software forms the interface
