Track - A
Exponents and
Powers
1. The product of a number ‘a’ with itself , ‘n’ times is given by
a×a×a…×a (n times) and is written as an which is called the
exponential form. Here ‘a’ is called base ‘n’ is called the
exponent or index or power of a , an can be read as nth power of
a or a is raised to the power of ‘n’.

Example-
a×a×a×a…. ×a (n times) = an
a = base
n = exponent or power or index of a
an = nth power of a or a is raised to the power of n
2. The first power of a number is the number itself a1 =
a
Example - 81 = 8
451 = 45

3. The second power of a number is called square, a × a =

a2
Example - 8 × 8 = 82 = 64
5 × 5 = 52 =25

4. The third power of a number is called cube, a × a × a =

a3
Example - 3 × 3 × 3 = 33 = 64
5 × 5 × 5 = 53 = 125
5. One raised to any integral power is 1
Example- 165 = 1
134 = 1

6.
i) (-1)n = -1 when ‘n’ is any odd positive integral power

Example- (-1)21 = -1 , (-1)57 = -1

ii) (-1)n = 1 when ‘n’ is any Even positive integral power

Example- (-1)22 = 1 , (-1)56 = 1

7.
i) Square of any number is a2 = a × a

Example - 82 = 8 × 8 = 64
52 = 5 × 5 =25

ii) cube of any number is a3 = a × a × a

Example - 33 = 3 × 3 × 3 = 27
53 = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125
8. Let a be any non – zero real number and m,n be positive
integers then
Example
i) am × an = am+n 24 × 25 = 24+5 = 29

ii) am ÷ an = am-n 24 ÷ 23 = 24-3 = 21

iii) a0 = 1 40 = 1

iv) (am)n = amn (32)3 = 32 x 3 = 36

v) a-m = 4-2 =

vi) (ab)m = am bm (2x3)2 = 22 x 32

vii) ()m = )2 =
9. We have a-m = , where m is a positive
integer and a is a non zero integer, then we
say a-m is the multiplicative inverse of am or a-m
=

Example - 4-2 = =
Polynomials

1. Polynomial : An algebraic expression involving

the variables with non negative integral
powers is called a “polynomial”.

Example- P(x) = 3x +2y

P(x) = 4x2 + 2x +5
2. Monomial : A polynomial having one term is
called as monomial “mono means one”
Example- 2x , 5x2 , 8

3. Binomial: A polynomial having two

terms is called a binomial “ bi means two”
Example- 2x+4 , 5x2 + 4 , 8x3+3

4. Trinomial : A polynomial having three

terms is called trinomial “ tri means 3”
Example- 6x2 + 4x +4 , 8x3 + 3x2 + 5
