VARIABILITY
(Ungrouped Data)
Measure of Variability
It is used to measure how distributed a set
of data is over the values they assume.
Example:
Range and mean deviation are
examples of measures of variability.
Range (R) – the difference between the
largest value and the smallest value in a
data set
Range of Ungrouped Data
To find the range of ungrouped data, we
simply subtract the largest value and the
lowest value in a data set.
Example:
In the data set below, the largest value is
120, and the smallest value is 81.
81 92 110 90 120 101
R = largest value – smallest value
= 120 – 81 = 39
Mean deviation
Average deviation – the average of
absolute differences between each
value in a data set and the mean.
We can compute for the mean deviation of an ungrouped data
using the formula:
Where:
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝐷𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑈𝑛𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑝𝑒𝑑 𝐷𝑎𝑡𝑎 =
𝑛 is the total number of values in the data set;
𝑥 is each value in the data set, and
𝑥̅is the mean of the values.
Mean deviation
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝐷𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑈𝑛𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑝𝑒𝑑 𝐷𝑎𝑡𝑎 =
Example:
To compute for the mean deviation of the data set below, we follow
these
steps:

1. Compute the mean of the data set.

Example:
To compute for the mean deviation of the data set below, we follow
these steps:
81 92 110 90 120 101
2. Get the absolute value of the difference of each value and the

mean.
Value (x)
81 99 |81 − 99| = 18
92 99 |92 − 99| = 7
110 99 |110 − 99| = 11
90 99 |90 − 99| = 9
120 99 |120 − 99| = 21
101 99 |101 − 99| = 2
Mean deviation

Example:
To compute for the mean deviation of the data set below, we follow
these steps:
81 92 110 90 120 101
3. Substitute the values to the formula for the mean deviation of
ungrouped data
