Direct Objects

Compléments d’objet direct (COD)

Direct objects are the people or things(noun) in a sentence


that receive the action of the verb.It is the thing or person
acted upon.
Direct object follows the verb in the sentence.

Direct object pronouns are the words that replace the


direct object to avoid repetition
Eg:- "Marie was at the bank today. When I saw Marie,
I smiled."

In order to avoid repeating Marie, we replace it with direct


object pronoun ‘her’
Eg:- "Marie was at the bank today. When I saw her,
I smiled."
The French direct object pronouns are:-
Me (m’) (meuh)= me
Te (t’) (teuh)= you
Le (L') = him, it
La (L') = her, it
Nous = us
Vous = you
Les = them
French direct object pronouns are placed in front of
the verb.
To find the direct object in a sentence, ask the question
“Qui”(Who/whom?) or “Quoi” (kva)(What?) after the verb
Eg:- il regarde ce film -> il regarde quoi? - ce film(objet
direct)

Eg:- Elle écoute son professor -> Elle écoute qui? -


son professor (objet direct)

Eg:- il regarde le film Eg:- Je mange le pain.


il le regarde Je le mange (I'm eating it.)

Negative:- il ne regarde pas le film


il ne le regarde pas
Interrogative:- Regarde-t-il le film?
Le regarde-t-il?

Futur proche:- Babita va lire le journal


Babita va le lire

Exception:- Impératif affirmatif

Eg:- Lis le journal! Neg:- Ne lis pas le journal!


Lis-le! Ne le lis pas!
