Lesson 2.

3–Density
Curves and the
Normal Distribution
Unit 2: Modeling One-Variable Statistics
Warm-up
1. Suppose your History test score had a z-score of -0.6
and your Science test score had a z-score of -0.75. What
information does this tell you?

2. Your History test is the 27.43 percentile and your

Science test is the 22.66 percentile. What information
does this tell you?

3. If a distribution has a mean of 75 and a standard

deviation of 6, what is the z-score and percentile of a
data point of 84?
Learning Targets
1. I can use a density curve to model a distribution of
quantitative data.

2. I can identify the relative locations of the mean and

median of a distribution from a density curve.

3. I can draw a normal curve to model a distribution of

quantitative data.
Can You Predict The Shape?
For each task, predict (sketch) what the histogram of the
whole class data would look like. Draw and label lines
where you predict the mean and median will be. After, the
actual histogram, mean, and median will be revealed.
Can You Predict The Shape?
Task 1: Roll a die three times.
Predicted histogram: Actual histogram:

Task 2: Try to toss a penny and make it land on the
target. Measure the distance of the penny from the target
in cm. Round to the nearest tenth. Do this three times.

Task 3: Try to stop your stopwatch at exactly 5 seconds.
Record what the stopwatch reads below. Record to the
hundredths place. Do this three times.

QuickNotes

A density curve is an idealized

representation of a distribution in which
the area under the curve is defined to be

Lesson App 2.3-Still waiting for the
server?
How does your web browser get a file from the Internet? Your computer sends a
request for the file to a web server, and the web server sends back a response.
For one particular web server, the time (in seconds) after the start of an hour at
which a randomly selected request is received can be modeled by a uniform
distribution on the interval from 0 to 3600 seconds.

1. Draw a density curve to model the amount of time after an hour at which a
request is received by the web server. Be sure to include scales on both axes.
2. About what proportion of requests are received within the first 5 minutes (300
seconds) after the hour?
3. Find the interquartile range of this distribution.
4. What is the mean of the density curve? Explain your answer.
5. What is the median of the density curve? Explain your answer.
