INTRODUCTION TO

ICT Empowerment Technologies

Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:

❑ understand what is Information and Communication

Technology (ICT);
❑ compare and contrast the different trends in ICT and
use them to their advantage; and
❑ appreciate the role of ICT in human lives.
Let’s do this:

What do I know about ICT?

WHAT IS ICT?
❑Information - facts provided or learned
about something or someone.

❑Communication - the imparting or

exchanging of information or news.

❑Technology - machinery and equipment

developed from the application of scientific
knowledge.
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION
TECHNOLOGY
❑ICT refers to technologies that provide access
to information through telecommunications.
(According to Techterms.com)

❑Information and Communication

Technology (ICT) deals with the use of
different communication technologies such as
mobile phones, telephone, Internet, etc. to
locate, save, send and edit information.
ICT
The term information and
communications technology
(ICT) is generally accepted
to mean all technologies
that combined, allow
people and organizations to
interact in the digital
world. -Techtarget

ICT in the Philippines
❑Several International companies dub
Philippines as the “ICT HUB OF ASIA.”

Because…
❑There's a vast growth of ICT-related jobs in
the country, one of which is the call center or
BPO (Business Process Outsourcing)
ICT in the Philippines
❑There are 106.8 cellphones per 100 Filipinos
(ITU, 2012)

❑In data gathered by the Annual Survey of the Philippines

Business and Industries 19.3% ICT Industry share
(NSO, 2010).

❑ICT saved companies a lot of resources with the

kind of communication technology they use
nowadays. (Time and Money)

Web Web Web
Web 1.0
• Static Web

STATIC
▪(known as flat page or stationary page)
▪page is “as is” and cannot be
manipulated by the user
▪web page can read and print only the
contents
▪The content is also the same for all
users
▪Invented in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee
Web 1.0
• Static Web

Therefore…
▪Users of this web page can read and print
only the contents, users doesn’t have the
ability to edit the content, nor put comments
on the web page, only the web administrator
Web 1.0 – STATIC Web
▪The first web

Web 1.0 – STATIC Web (TRIVIA)
Web 2.0
• Dynamic Web

▪DYNAMIC Web Pages are interactive type of web pages also

known as “Social Internet”
▪It is characterized by interactive websites, social
knowledge sharing, user-generated content, online
collaboration, embedded applications and multimedia,
mobile connections and social media
▪The term “dynamic” is coined by Darcy DiNucci on January
1999
Web 2.0 – DYNAMIC Web
Features:
▪allows users to interact with the page through
comment or create a user account
▪Browsers can now be used for their user interface,
application software (or web applications), and even
for file storage.

▪Examples of Web 2.0 includes social networking sites,

blogs, wikis, video sharing sites, hosted services, and web
applications.
FEATURES OF WEB 2.0
Features of Web 2.0
FOLKSONOMY
‒It allows users to categorize and
classify/arrange information
using freely chosen keywords
(e.g., tagging).
‒Social media sites use tags that
start with the pound sign (#).
This is also referred to as
hashtag.
Features of Web 2.0
RICH USER
EXPERIENCE
‒ Content is dynamic and is
responsive to user’s input.
‒User have the full authority
in modifying the content of
the page which allows the
viewers to see in the
website.
Features of Web 2.0
USER PARTICIPATION
‒the owner of the website is not
the only one who is able to put
content. Others are able to
place a content of their own by
means of comment, reviews,
and evaluation and participate
in a poll.
Features of Web 2.0
MASS PARTICIPATION
‒It is a diverse information
sharing through universal
web access. Since most
users can use the Internet,
Web 2.0’s content is based
on people from various
cultures.
Features of Web 2.0

LONG TAIL
‒Services are offered on demand
rather than on a one-time purchase
‒More Specific purpose on things
gathered
‒It saves storage capacity of the
device you are using
Features of Web 2.0
SOFTWARE AS A
SERVICE (SaaS)
‒Users will subscribe to software
only when needed rather than
purchasing them. This is a
cheaper option if you do not
always need to use software.
Web 3.0
• Semantic Web

▪SEMANTIC Web Pages

▪The Semantic Web is a movement
led by the World Wide Web
Consortium (W3C).
▪The W3C standard encourages
web developers to include
semantic content in their web
pages.
Web 3.0
• Semantic Web

▪According to the W3C, “The Semantic

Web provides a common framework
that allows data to be shared and
reused across application, enterprise,
and community.
▪The aim of Web 3.0 is to have
machines (or servers) understand the
user’s preferences to be able to
deliver web content specifically
targeting the user.
Web 3.0’s main characteristics
include, but are not limited to:
• Real-time - events and information are made available to
users as they happen.

• Ubiquitous - Users are always connected to the Internet.

• Machine learning - Computers and mobile devices can

create data and make decisions based on the user’s
previous actions.
Possible challenges of Web 3.0
▪Security - The user’s security is also in question
since the machine is saving his or her preferences
▪Vastness - The World Wide Web already contains
billions of web pages.
▪Vagueness - Certain words are imprecise. The
words “old” and “small” would depend on the user.
▪Logic - Since machines use logic, there are
certain limitations for a computer to be able to
predict what the user is referring to at a given time.

Let’s try this: STATIC OR DYNAMIC

connection, visit the following sites and evaluate it if is just a static or
dynamic one. Complete the table below:

‒The popularity of
smartphones and tablets has
taken a major rise over the
years. This is largely because
of the devices’ capability to
do tasks that were originally
found in personal computers.

What I can do: Planning the correct platform
to address situational challenges
DIRECTIONS:
• As a student you can make a simple way to address some
situational challenges in school, at home or in your community.
• Take a look to your surroundings and identify what problem that
needs to be addressed. Part of this, you will be making a simple
campaign in which you are going to use ICT tool to help address
this problem.
• Using the guided questions below, it will help you in planning to
address this situational challenges.
Name: Date: Score:
Grade & Section:
Address/Area: “Pinagpala St. Bagong Pag-asa”
Community problem: “Littering”
Campaign Name: “Kalinisan para sa Kaligtasan”
Brief description of the community problem:

What ICT trends will you use to address this problem? Social media and Mobile technologies
How do you plan it to be address using ICT?
• What platform/application do you think best fit to create the change in order to address this
problem: (e.g., WordPress, Facebook group, page etc.)?

• Why did you choose this kind of online platform/applications?

• What will be the content of your platform?

Reflection:

Compose an insightful reflection on the

nature of ICT in the context of your life,
society and to your professional track.
