HISTORY of SPORTS
• The documented history of sports was 3,000 years ago.
• preparation for war or training as hunter,
• 1st Olympic Games in 776 BC—, which included events
such as foot and chariot races, wrestling, jumping, discus
and javelin throwing
• UNESCO in1978 - described sport and physical education
as a “fundamental right for all”
• Most sports today only developed their current form during the 19th and
20th century.
• Participating in organized sports have been shown to :
a. improve health, fitness and academic performance
b. relieve stress
c. teach important lessons like good sportsmanship, teamwork, and
perseverance
-One of the important characteristics of the combination of sports and
education is that teenagers can be both intellectual, educated and
physically trained to attain athletic excellence.

known connotation of sports is
into play, games, and contests.

Preparatory Skills to
Sport Participation
In order to perform well in the sport, which a person chooses
to engage in, he or she must know and understand the movement
skills involved in these sports.
a. History – the inventor of the sport, country of origin, and development of the game.
b. Court Dimensions or Venue – where the games are played (indoor, outdoor, or both), size, different designs for male or female, and safety procedures for the players.
c.Equipment and Gear – proper protective gears, uniforms, and outfits which also involve the safety of players and the officials.
d.Technical and Tactical Skills – technical skills are the basics of playing the game (e.g., basketball – dribble, shoot, pass) while tactical skills are the strategies to take advantage during the game.
e. Rules of the Game – set of rules on how the game is played, violations, penalties, how to score points, how many players are allowed, etc.
f. Officiating – officials of the game, their duties and responsibilities of calling for violations, penalties, points, etc. and regulating fair play.
