WHAT IS A NATURAL DISASTER?
In this lesson, you'll learn about the different
types of natural disasters.
What is a
natural disaster?
NATURAL DISASTER

It occurs when a natural hazard occurs

and significantly harm and damage the
community.
Landslide
A landslide is when rocks, soil, and
dirt move quickly down a hill or
mountain. It happens when the
ground becomes too wet or weak to
stay in place. Heavy rain,
earthquakes, or cutting trees can
cause landslides. Landslides can
destroy homes, roads, and forests.
They are very dangerous for people
living near hills or mountains. To stay
safe, people should avoid building
houses in risky areas.
Earthquak
e
An earthquake is when the ground shakes
because rocks inside the Earth move. These
rocks are deep under the ground and sometimes
break suddenly. This makes the Earth shake, and
we can feel it on the surface. Some earthquakes
are small and do not cause much damage.
Strong earthquakes can break buildings, roads,
and bridges. People should stay safe by going
under a strong table or standing in a safe open
space. After an earthquake, people check their
homes and help others who may need it.
Volcanic
Eruption
A volcano is a mountain that can erupt
with hot lava and ash. Lava comes from
deep inside the Earth. Some volcanoes
erupt many times, and some stop
erupting forever. When a volcano erupts,
it can be dangerous for people and
animals. But after a long time, the ground
near volcanoes becomes good for plants.
Forest Fire
A forest fire is a big fire that burns trees,
plants, and grass in a forest area. It can
start naturally from lightning or be caused
by people, like from campfires or
cigarettes. Forest fires spread very fast,
especially when the weather is dry, hot,
and windy. They can destroy trees, homes,
and the habitats of animals. Smoke from
forest fires can also make the air
unhealthy to breathe, even far away from
the fire. Firefighters use planes, water, and
special tools to stop the fire and keep
people safe.
