Introduction to

IT
Objectives

•Define the basics of what is computer

•Demonstrate the ability to use computer

•Appreciate the importance of IT in modern society and

develop a positive attitude towards learning and using
new technologies.
What is Computer?

•A machine that can solve problems by accepting data

performing certain operations and presenting the results
of those operations under the direction of detailed step-
by-step instructions.

• The term computer has been derived from the word

“COMPUTE” which means calculate.
What is Computer?

Computer is an electronic device, used for performing

calculations and controlling operations that be either
expressed in logical or numerical terms.

1. It stores and process data in binary form according

to instructions given to it in a variable program.

2. Computer need to be told exactly what to do and

how to do to accomplish a task
What is Computer?

4. It is a combination of hardware and software

5. Software is the set of instructions given to the

computer to perform a task

6. The physical parts that make up computer are called

hardware, which are made of circuits and transistors
Computer Main Operations

1) Takes in data and instructions (input)

2) works with the data (processing)

3) puts out information (output)

Characteristics of a
Computer
Speed

Computers process data and deliver outputs

in fractions of a second, ensuring that
required information is available promptly,
enabling timely and accurate decision-
making.
Accuracy

Computers are error-free in their

operations, producing precise results.
Errors, if any, are typically due to faulty
input data, erroneous instructions, or
defective programs, leading to the concept
of GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out).
Reliable

The output generated by a computer is

highly reliable, provided the input data is
accurate. This reliability makes computers a
trusted tool for various applications.
Versatile

Computers have a vast storage capacity, allowing

them to accept and store large amounts of
information for extended periods. They can
quickly recall stored data, utilizing both primary
memory (for immediate access) and secondary
memory (for long-term storage).
Versatile

A computer can perform a wide range of

tasks, including accepting input, executing
arithmetic and logical operations, and
generating outputs in the desired format.
Automatic

Computers operate automatically once

programmed, requiring no human
intervention until the program completes or
reaches a logical endpoint.
Diligent

Computers do not experience fatigue or

distraction. They perform tasks consistently
at the same speed and accuracy, regardless
of the duration of the operation.
Recreation

Computers are widely used for

entertainment, such as gaming, animation,
and multimedia applications, bringing life
and interactivity to various forms of content.
Networking Capacity

Computers can connect to other computers,

facilitating communication and data sharing,
which has led to the development of
computer networks and the internet.
Compactness

Advances in technology have significantly

reduced the size of computers. Modern
devices, such as laptops and notebooks, are
portable and convenient for use outside of
traditional settings.
