Introduction to android

Android is a mobile operating system based on a modified version of the Linux kernel and other open source
software, designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

It is developed by Google and later the OHA (Open Handset Alliance). Java language is mainly used to write

the android code even though other languages can be used.

Basically, Android is thought of as a mobile operating system. But it is not limited to mobile only. It is currently

used in various devices such as mobiles, tablets, televisions etc.

Android provides a rich application framework that allows us to build innovative apps and games for mobile

devices in a Java language environment.


open handset alliance
It's a consortium of 84 companies such as google, samsung, AKM, synaptics, KDDI, Garmin, Teleca,
Ebay, Intel etc.

It was established on 5th November, 2007, led by Google. It is committed to advance open standards, provide

services and deploy handsets using the Android Platform.

The goal of the OHA is to create mobility without borders where mobile device and mobile applications all work

together to achieve a single goal i.e. providing users with the service and applications that they want and need.
Android Ecosystem.

The android ecosystem is a collection of hardware devices, software applications, and


services which is combined together to form an Android operating system.

manufacture the hardware and as well as the custom
application components

contributes to the ecosystem and employ developers
4. Freelance android Developers- have the skill-set to
contribute to the ecosystem for android development
Need of Android
1.Desktop- The android phone adds widgets to the desktop. Eg facebook
2.Connectivity- Four connection device like Bluetooth,WIFI,network,GPS
3.Browser- Android OS browser is one of the best browser on mobile market.
4.Open to carrier- If we know java programming then we are open to android world.
5.Market- Android OS has an android market. The android apps are free and work as well.
6.Future-The future mobile phones are basically going to be smart phones.
7.Multi Notification- Android phones have multi-notification system.
8.Google Integration-The android have inbuild google support. Eg- map,Gmail etc

10.Endless Personalization-The android cell phones allows to configure their mobile to look and behave exactly like they
want.
Features of Android
1.Open source: Android is an open source operating system.
2. Storage: SQLite, a lightweight relational database, is used for data storage purposes.
3. Media support: Android supports various audio, video, still media formats like images etc.
4. Multi-touch: Android has native support for multi-touch which was initially made available in handsets such as the HTC
hero.
6. Video-calling: Video calling through Google Talk is available within Android 2.3.4 and later. Users with Google+ android
app can video chat with other google+ users through hangouts.
7. Multitasking: multitasking of application, with unique handling of memory allocation, will be existing
8. Accessibility: built in text to speech is provided by Talk back for people with low or no vision.
9. Voice based features: Google search through voice has been available since operating release. Voice activities for
navigation, calling, texting, etc. are supported on Android 2.2 forwards.
10. External storage: most android devices include microSD slot and can read microSD cards formatted with Fat32, Ext3 or
Exr4 file system.
