Structure of a Fault Tree
Top Event (TE): Represents the complete system failure being analyzed; symbolized by a rectangle with no output leads.
Intermediate Event (IE): Events between basic events and the TE, caused by combinations of basic events; symbolized by
rectangles with input and output leads.
Underdeveloped Event: Events with insufficient information but not basic events, symbolized by diamonds or rhombuses.

Purpose Identifies causes of a specific system failure (Top Event). Analyzes the outcomes of an initiating event.
Representation Represented as a tree with the Top Event at the top. Represented as a tree starting with the Initiating Event.
Events Analyzed Explores failure paths leading to the Top Event. Explores success and failure paths following an event.
Primary Output Identifies failure modes and contributing causes. Maps all possible outcomes and probabilities from an event.
Application Used in failure analysis and risk mitigation. Used in reliability assessment and consequence analysis.
Risk Quantification Provides probabilities for the Top Event based on input failures. Assigns probabilities to different outcomes of the event.
