CODING
DECODING
Introduction
Coding: A particular code or pattern is used to express a word in English language to express it as a
different word. The coded word itself does not make any sense unless we know the code, i.e., unless
we know the pattern or code that has been followed.

Decoding: It refers to the process of arriving at the equivalent English word from the code word
given. Hence, we can look at two broad categories of questions in coding-decoding.
Approach
● Observe alphabets or numbers given in the code keenly.

● Find the sequence it follows whether it is ascending or descending.

● Detect the rule in which the alphabets/numbers/words follow.

● Fill the appropriate letter/number/word in the blank given.

Commonly used codes
1. Use the letter that comes one or a fixed number of places before it in the alphabet.
2. Use a letter as many places from the end of the alphabet as the original letter is from the
beginning of the alphabet.
3. Each vowel may be replaced by the next vowel that comes in the alphabet and each
consonant by another consonant following a certain pattern with reference to the
consonant under consideration.
4. Use one code for all the letters in even places in the given word and a different code for
letters and the odd places in the given word to give a new word.
5. The same letters in the given word may be used in a cyclic or in some other order to
give the coded word.
6. Combination of two or more of the above ways of coding.
Types
1. Letter Coding

2. Number Coding

3. Substitution
Letter coding
Alphabets in a word are replaced by other alphabets according to a specific rule to know its code. So
the common rule should be detected first.

By Heart:
A=1 B=2 C=3 D=4 E=5 F=6 G=7 H=8 I=9 J = 10 K = 11 L = 12 M = 13
N =14 O = 15 P = 16 Q = 17 R = 18 S = 19 T = 20 U=21 V = 22 W = 23 X = 24
Y = 25 Z =26

Example:
‘ZYXW’ is coded as ‘ABCD’ then ‘STUV’ is coded as...........
Solution: Z – A, Y– B, X – C, W – D
V – E, U – F, T – G, S – H
STUV = HGFE (Answer = HGFE)
(Rule= front alphabet= back alphabet.)
Number coding
In this each alphabet or words are assigned to the numeric values we should observe the given
letters and the assigned values and use the same rule to find the value of given code.

Example:
Apple is coded as 25563, Rung is coded as 7148. Then purple is coded as?
Solution:
A P P L E R U
N G
2 5 5 6 3 7 1
4 8

Answer: PURPLE – 517563

Substitution coding
In this section, object names are substituted with different object names. We should carefully trace
the substitution and answer the given question.

Example:
‘Book’ is coded as ‘pencil’, ‘pencil’ is coded as ‘mirror’, ‘mirror’ is coded as ‘book’. Then what is useful
to write on a paper?
Solution: Pencils are useful to write on a paper.
Pencil is coded as a mirror.
Answer: Mirror

Data for question:
In a certain code language , codes are decided on the basis of following rules and conditions.
Rules:
1. All the consonants that appear before 'N' in alphabet series are to be coded as 0-9.
(C =1, D= 2 and so on)
2. All the consonants that appear after 'N' in alphabet series are to be coded as 0-9.
(Q=1, R=2 and so on)
3. 'N' is to be coded as 1.
Conditions:
I. If a word starts with a consonant but ends with a vowel then all the vowels of that word are to be coded as '&'
and codes for last and first letters will be interchanged.
II. If a word has more than two vowels then the first vowel is to be coded as ^, second vowel as $, third vowel
as @ and then repeat the codes in the same sequence from the fourth vowel onwards.
III. If in a word a consonant that appears after M is either preceded or followed or both by a vowel then all the
vowels of that word are to be coded as '#' and 1 is added to the original code of all consonants. (If after adding
1, the original code comes in double digits then adds the digits until single digit is obtained.)
IV. If none of the above conditions is applicable in a word then vowels of such words are coded as '+'.
V. If more than one conditions are applicable in a single word then apply all the conditions as per the given
order.
