Compressible flow (gas
dynamics)
• A compressible flow is that flow in which the
density of the fluid changes during flow.
• All real fluids are compressible to some extent and therefore their
density will change with change in pressure or temperature.
• If the relative change in density ∆ ρ/ρ is small, the fluid can be
treated as incompressible.

• The gases are treated as compressible fluids and study


of this type of flow is often referred to as ‘Gas dynamics’.
Some important problems where compressibility
effect has to be considered are :
(i) Flow of gases through nozzles, orifices ;
(ii) Compressors ;
(iii) Flight of aeroplanes and projectiles moving at higher
altitudes;
(iv) Water hammer and accoustics.
