Time period

•the time taken by an alternating

quantity to complete one cycle is called
its time period .
Frequency
• The number of cycles/second is called the frequency of the
alternating quantity.
Amplitude
• The maximum value, positive or negative, of an alternating quantity is
known as its amplitude.

Form factor
• The ratio of the R.M.S. value of the alternative current and the
average value of the alternative current is defined as form factor.

FACTOR
• The ratio of maximum value and r.m.s value of
alternative current is defined as crest or peak or
amplitude factor .

Explain the difference between an
AC generator and a DC generator.
Characteristics AC GENARATOR DC GENARATOR
OUTPUT POWER Generates ac electric power Produce dc electric power
RINGS It has slip rings It uses a split rings commutator
MAINTENANCE Requires very little maintenance It requires frequent maintenance.
and is thus more reliable than a DC
generator
VOLTAGE LEVEL Used to generate vary high voltage Used to generate comparatively
lower voltage
COMMUTUTORS It does not have commutators It possesses commutators in order
to counter the changing polarities
effect
VOLTAGE AC voltage can be distributed quit DC voltage is comparatively difficult
DISTRIBUTION easily using transformer to distribute efficiently
TYPES Rotating armature, rotating field, Permanent magnet, separately
single phase, three phase. excited, self-excited.
