What is Team Development?

As the process by which teams are formed and get organized
to work together toward a common goal, Team Development
stage sees progress in doing of tasks as well as relationships
both within (and outside) the team. The American
psychologist, Bruce Tuckman defined a team development
model that has been widely used.

Belbin's Team
Roles

Belbin's model identifies nine roles that are essential for

a team’s success. Each role has specific strengths and

weaknesses.

Roles include Coordinator, Shaper, Implementer,

Completer Finisher, Team Worker, Resource
Investigator, Plant, Monitor Evaluator and
Specialist.
Each role contributes differently to the team’s dynamics.

By balancing these roles within a team, organizations can

ensure that all necessary functions are covered, leading to

enhanced team effectiveness and performance.

Comparison of Models

Tuckman vs. Belbin: Tuckman’s model is more

process-oriented, focusing on stages of team

development, whereas Belbin’s model is role-

oriented, focusing on the balance of roles within a

team.
Tuckman’s model is useful for understanding team
dynamics over time, while Belbin’s model helps in

structuring teams for optimal role coverage.

Lencioni: This model focuses on identifying and

resolving dysfunctions, providing a practical

approach to improving team performance.
Choosing the Right
Model

Consider the size of the team, the specific

goals, and any existing challenges when
choosing a model.
Models can be adapted to fit the specific
needs and context of the team.

Often, elements from multiple models can be

combined to address the team’s needs

comprehensively.
Conclusion

• Effective team development is crucial for achieving high

performance.
• Each model offers unique insights and strategies.
• Selecting the appropriate model can significantly enhance team

success.
• Encourage the audience to evaluate their teams and apply the

models that best fit their needs.
