INTRODUCTION

CUBOID

Cuboid is the extended format of rectangle, which has length, breadth and height.

A cuboid is a three dimensional solid that has 6 faces (rectangular), 8 vertices

and 12 edges.

A cuboid has three dimensions such as length, width and height.

CUBOID SHAPE

Faces of Cuboid

A Cuboid is made up of six rectangular faces.

In the above-given figure, the six faces are:

• ABFE
• DAEH
• DCGH
• CBFG
• ABCD
• EFGH
CUBOID SHAPE

Edges of Cuboid

The sides of all the rectangular faces are referred to as the edges of the cuboid.
As we know, there are 12 edges for a cuboid.

the opposite sides of a rectangle are equal.

Therefore,

AB = CD = GH = EF
AE = DH = BF = CG
EH = FG = AD = BC
CUBOID SHAPE

Vertices of Cuboid

The point of intersection of the 3 edges of a cuboid is called the vertex of a cuboid
and a cuboid has 8 vertices.

From the given cuboid figure, the 8 vertices are

A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H.
visualization of faces, edges and vertices of a cuboid
Creation of Rubik’s cube

Here, if we cut rubik’s cube to form four rows and four column on each face then the total
number of unit cubes formed is

4*4*4 = 64
DIRECT FORMULA

3 side painted = 8

2 side painted = 4 ( a+b+c-6)

1 side painted =2 [ (a-2)(b-2) + (b-2)(c-2) + (c-2)(a-2) ]

No side painted = (a-2)(b-2)(c-2)

where, a is number of rows

where, b is number of column

where, c is number of cuts mades

PROBLEM SOLVING

Directions: A cube of side 10 cm is coloured red with a 2 cm wide green strip along all
the sides on all the faces. The cube is divided into 125 smaller cubes of equal size.
Answer the following questions based on this statement.

How many cubes have three green faces each?

All the corner cubes are painted green. So there are 8 cubes with 3 sides painted with
green.

Answer the following questions based on this statement.

How many cubes have one face red and an adjacent face green?

There is no cube having one face red and an adjacent face green as all the green painted
cubes got paint on at least 2 faces.

Answer the following questions based on this statement.

How many cubes have at least one face coloured?

Let us calculate the number of cubes with no painting. By formula, = = 27

98
Therefore, there are 125 – 27 = 98 cubes having at least one face coloured.
PROBLEM SOLVING

The following questions are based on the information given below:

1. A cuboid shaped wooden block has 4 cm length, 3 cm breadth and 5 cm height.
2. Two sides measuring 5 cm x 4 cm are coloured in red.
3. Two faces measuring 4 cm x 3 cm are coloured in blue.
4. Two faces measuring 5 cm x 3 cm are coloured in green.
5. Now the block is divided into small cubes of side 1 cm each.

4.1. How many small cubes will have will have three faces coloured ?
A.14
B.8
C.10
D.12

Such cubes are related to the corners of the cuboid and in the cuboid there are 8 corners.

Hence, the required number of small cubes is 8. B. 8

5. Now the block is divided into small cubes of side 1 cm each.

How many small cubes will have only one face coloured ?

(2 from the front + 2 from the back + 3 from the left + 3 from the right + 6 from the top + 6
from
the bottom = 22)
22
Hence, the total number cubes that has one face coloured is 22.

How many small cubes will have no faces coloured ?

Required number of small cubes = (5 - 2) x (4 - 2) x (3 - 2)

=3x2x1
6
Hence, the total number cubes that has no face coloured is 6.

How many small cubes will have two faces coloured with red and green colors ?

Required number of small cubes = 6 from the top and 6 from the bottom

=6+6 12

Hence, the total number cubes that has two faces coloured with red and green colors is 12.
