Direct Current Circuit

28.2 Resistors in Series and Parallel

Resistance:
A pathway through which electrons can move is
known as a circuit, and the conductor of which it
is made offers some impedance to the
movement of electrons.

From Ohm’s Law:

Resistances in Series and Parallel:
Components parts forming a circuit may be
connected together in two different ways,
1. In Series
2. In Parallel
Electric circuits
• How do we deal with a more complicated case?
What is the current flowing from the battery?
Electric circuits
• When components are connected in series, the
same electric current flows through them
𝐼

• Charge conservation : current cannot disappear!
Electric circuits
• When components are connected in parallel, the
same potential difference drops across them

𝑉 𝑉 𝑉

• Points connected by a wire are at the same voltage!

Resistors in circuits
• Resistors are the basic components of a circuit that
determine current flow : Ohm’s law I = V/R
Resistors in series:
• If two resistors are connected in series, what is the
total resistance?

Resistors in series:
• If two resistors are connected in series, what is the
total resistance?

𝑅𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 𝑅1 + 𝑅2

• Total resistance increases in series!

the total resistance?

• Total resistance decreases in parallel!
Resistors in series/parallel
• What’s the current flowing?

(1) Combine these 2

resistors in parallel:

1 1 1
= +
𝑅𝑝𝑎𝑖𝑟 30 50
𝑅 𝑝𝑎𝑖𝑟 =18.75 Ω

𝑅𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 20+18.75+ 20=58.75 Ω

(2) Combine all the
resistors in series: (3) Current
(B) Find the current in each resistor.
(C) Calculate the power delivered to each
resistor and the total power delivered to the
combination of resistors.
