Preposition
Definition:

A preposition is a word that shows


the relationship between a noun or pronoun
and other words in a sentence. It helps
describe the position, direction, time, or
method related to something.
Example:

1. The cat is on the table . (Position)

2. She walked to the park. (Direction)

3. We will meet after lunch. (Time)

4. He wrote a letter with a pen .(Method)

Simple Preposition
Definition:

A Simple Preposition are single

word prepositions that are used to show the

relationship between nouns,pronouns,or

other elements in a sentence.


 Example:

1. This gift is for you.

‘for’ is used to indicate the purpose.

2.We will meet at 5PM .

‘at’ is used to specify the exact time .

3.He traveled by train.

‘by’ indicates the means or methods of travel.


Preposition of Manner
Definition :

Preposition of manner indicate

the way or method in which something is

done. It indicates the manner or method in

which something occurs.


 Example:

1. She sings in a beautiful voice.

‘in’ (style or manner)

2. He runs like a cheetah.

‘like’ (similar to)

3. She works as a doctor.

‘as’ (in the role or capacity)


Preposition of Place
Definition:

A Preposition of Place is a type of

preposition that indicates the location or

position of someone or something. These

words help clarify where an object or person

is in relation to something else.


 Example:

1. The teacher is infront of the class.

‘infront’ used when something is before another object.

2. He stood between the two trees.

‘between’ describes the position of something relative to two other objects

or points.

3. The store is next to the park.

‘next’ describes the position of something beside or very close to another

object.
Preposition of Time
Definition:

Prepositions of time tell us when

something happens, pointing to a specific

time, day, date, or period. It helps connect an

action or event to a time reference.


 Example:

1. We need to leave before 8 PM.

‘before’ is used to show an event happening earlier than another.

2. She fell asleep during the lecture.

‘during’ is used to refer to a period or the duration of an event.

3.The shop is open from 9 AM to 5 PM.

‘from’ shows the start and end of a time period.


Compound Preposition
Definition:

A Compound Preposition is a

preposition that is made up of more than one

word, usually combining a simple preposition

with another word .


 Example:

1. The game was canceled because of heavy rain.

‘because of ’ indicates a reason or cause .

2. She accepted the award on the behalf of her team.

‘behalf of ’is used to indicates representation or acting

for someone else.

3. He is studying in addition to working full time .

‘in addition to’ is used to indicate something extra or an

added element.
Double Prepositon
Definition:

A double preposition is formed by

combining two simple prepositions to create a

new preposition that shows a more specific

relationship or position.
 Example:

1.The cat jumped down off the table.

‘down off ’ indicate movement from higher place.

2. He walked out from under the bridge.

‘out from’ provides a clear sense of direction.

3. He stood upon the stage.

‘upon’ indicates a position or location.


Preposition of Agent
Definition:

A preposition which acts an agent

between noun and verb known as preposition

of agent. It typically specifies who is

performing the action of the verb.


 Example:

1. Homework was finished by me.

‘by’ indicates the agent performing the action of finishing the homework.

2. Ali graduated with on degree.

‘with’ indicates the means or result .

3.The painting is a masterpiece of Picasso.

‘of’ indicates possession or origin in certain constructions.


Direction Preposition
Definition:

Prepositions of direction tell us

where something is going or where it is

directed. It describes the path or trajectory of

an object or person, often relating to

movement toward a specific location or goal.


 Example:

1. He walked into the room.

‘into’ Indicates movement from outside to a point inside.

2. The dog ran towards the park.

‘towards’ Indicates movement in the direction of something.

3. They walked across the street.

‘across’ Indicates movement from one side to another.
