The pictographic script used by the
ancient Egyptian is called hieroglyphic
writing. Hieroglyphs are the characters
used in this writing system.
Hieratic Writing
The Egyptian cursive script, called
hieratic writing, received its name from
the Greek hieratikos (‘priestly’). It was
invented and developed for everyday
purposes such as keeping records, for
writing administrative documents, legal
texts, and religious texts.
Demotic
Writing
Demotic refers to both the ancient Egypt
script derived from northern forms of
hieratic, having a Greek word meaning
‘popular script’. By 5th century bc,
demotic script had come into use
everywhere in Egypt for business and
literary purposes, although hieratic Coptic Writing
remained in use for religious text.
Coptic has an alphabetic script
based on the Greek alphabet, with
several letters derived from demotic
signs. There is a considerable and
varied literature in Egyptian. Coptic
texts are mostly of a religious nature.
