Study Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to;
 Explain what an interview process is about.
 Mention and define the types of interview.
 Enumerate the preparation an applicant goes
through for an interview.
 Mention the roles of the interviewer and interviewee
during and after an interview.
Introduction
How well an applicant performs at an interview determines one’s

chances of getting employed,being promoted, getting admission

among others. This topic will take you through the types of

interviews one can go through and the preparations to be made. It is

expected that after this lecture, you will be able to sail through an

interview successfully.
INTERVIEW

 An interview is a one-to-one or one-to-many interaction involving a question

and answer session for a specific purpose.

 The interaction is between an interviewer/interview panel and the interviewee.

 Interviews may be formal or informal.

 A formal interview follows some specific rules and regulations.

 An informal interview does not follow any laid down rules and regulations.
USES OF INTERVIEW

To send and receive information effectively.


Colleague workers are motivated to work towards a
common goal.

Information interview

It is used to:
 gather data on a phenomenon

 conduct investigations to ascertain the suitability or


otherwise of a product
 solicit people’s views/perception about an issue

 conduct investigations about a person accused of wrong


doing or a person nominated for an appointment etc.
Types of Interview Explained

Counseling interview

It involves a counselee trying to find out the problems of a


victim in order to offer remedies through guidance to ameliorate
the victim’s problems.

The victim could be suffering from:

bereavement, sickness, dismissal, lay-off, marital problems, etc.


Appraisal Interview

This interview is a way of assessing performance of

individual staff and company over a period of time. It is an

evaluation interview. It assists management and staff to

analyze how well goals have been met.


Disciplinary Interview

This interview is held to investigate any member of an

institution who has been accused of breaching the

institution’s regulations. For example, investigating a case

of a student who cheats in an examination.


Grievance Interview

This interview is conducted when an employee


complains about unfair treatment meted out to him or her
in an organization.
Exit Interview

During this interview, Management interacts with staff


(those who have left an organization) to gather appropriate
information that will promote future operations of the
organization.
Stress interview

With this kind of interview, applicants are put under stress


to determine how best they can cope with difficult
situations. Certain jobs demand that an applicant is taken
through that situation to test how that individual comports
himself or herself when under stress.
Selection interview

It is used to assess an applicant’s suitability for:


 a job appointment

 promotion

 enlistment into the security forces

 admission into an institution or a training programme,


etc.
PREPARING FOR AN INTERVIEW
THE INTERVIEWER

 Get necessary background information about the applicant/

interviewee.

 Establish the objectives for the interview/ know why you

organized the interview.

 Design critical/ appropriate questions for the applicant.

 Be in line with/ adapt to needs personality of the applicant.

 Choose a good venue, an appropriate time and date for the

interview.

THE INTERVIEWEE/APPLICANT

Find out about the job / position you have applied for; know the
duties and responsibilities attached to the position.
Find out about the organization’s
 Vision and Mission
 Organizational policy, structure, culture and values
Prepare yourself mentally/ psychologically before you go.
 Physical appearance is very important – Dress decently.
 Be punctual - report in good time.
DURING AN INTERVIEW
 The Interviewer

Begin the interview in good time.

 Don’t waste time- go straight to the questions to be asked.

Observe/consider the interviewee's body language/

gestures/non-verbal communication as ways of assessing

the interviewee.

End the interview in a thoughtful/appreciative way.


THE INTERVIEWEE
 Must enter the room confidently, greet and wait to be offered a seat

before you sit down.

 Use polite language and right forms of expressions

 Listen carefully to the questions.

 Think carefully about the questions before you speak.

 Learn to control yourself and your speech even where you disagree with

a point.

 Be honest with the answers you give.

 Sit comfortably and do not fidget with anything.

 Send the right signals out.


For instance
Sit in a relaxed manner.
Don’t be too stiff.
Don’t cross your legs.
Be calm.
If you don't hear a question, ask politely for it to be
repeated. This shouldn’t be too frequent.
AT THE END OF THE
INTERVIEW

When the panelists have finished with their questions, they

may ask you if you have any questions for them. Note that it

is not compulsory to ask any questions if you don’t have any.

CANDIDATE QUESTIONS- These are the questions an

interviewee asks at the end of the interview.

Eg. When should I expect a feedback on this interview? (p.70)


AFTER THE INTERVIEW
 THE INTERVIEWER

Every applicant should be written to. Those who were successful

should be made aware; those who were not successful should be

wished well in their endeavours to find a job.

 THE INTERVIEWEE

 Should send a short letter to thank them (organization/applicants)

for the interview.

 It reminds them about you and might open an opportunity for you;

it may send signals that you seriously want to work with them.

 Q.1 What can you tell us about yourself?

A. Introduce yourself briefly and mention your strengths e.g your

major achievements, skills and how prepared you are for the

interview.

 Q.2 Why do we have to employ you?

A. Explain why you see yourself suitable for the job.

 Q.3 Why do you want to leave your present employment?

A. Do not give a negative report about your present job. Just give a

positive reason why you want to join them.

A. Everybody has a weakness. Mention yours and say what you

are doing to overcome it.

 Q.5 What is your long-range objective?

A. Talk about plans to improve your academic and professional

competence and how you will use these to improve your work/

how the company will benefit from your higher qualifications.

 A. Do not quote any specific figure/amount. You can ask them to pay you

per their salary structure .

Q.7 How would you describe yourself in one word?


 A. You know yourself to be hardworking, responsible etc. A one-word

answer is required.

Q.8 Are you a team player?/Can you work with others in a group?
 Yes, then give an instance where you have worked effectively with

others.
