Hospital support service, which is
entrusted with processing and issue of
supplies including sterile instruments and
equipment used in various departments of
a hospital

The aim of CSSD is to provide an efficient,
economic, continuous and quality supply of
sterile materials to various areas of the
hospital with the ultimate objective of ensuring
high quality patient care.
Process of CSSD Dept.

- cleaning- Enzymatic solution

- disinfecting – hydrogen peroxide
- packing
- sterilizing
- storing and
- distributing
Trained personnel – helps to
- better control
- reliable result
- Reduce risk of infection
User departments or areas

- Laboratory
Soiled items
• Instruments
• Treatment Trays and sets
• Sterile linen packs
• Dressings
• Rubber goods – gloves, catheters, tubing
etc are used in the patient care area.
Types of Sterilization

1. Steam sterilization or autoclaving -Sterilization is done by heating with

pressurized steam

2. Gas sterilization : Ethlyne oxide(EO or EtO) is used. It is a colorless, poisonous

gas that attacks the cellular proteins and nucleic acids of microorganisms. The process
involves exposing products to ethylene oxide gas under vacuum in a sealed chamber.
- Plastic and delicate instruments are used for sterilization with ETO
- Precautions - aeration prior to use, special exhaust ventilation.

3.Plasma sterilization: Plasma sterilizes by a process called oxidation. The plasma

produces a chemical reaction in which all microorganisms are deactivated.

Concentrated Hydrogen peroxide is used

Hydrogen peroxide is injected into the chamber

Objectives of the CSSD Dept.
 Process and sterilize equipments and materials under
controlled conditions by trained and qualified personnel, so
contributing to total environmental control in the hospital.
 Effect greater economy by keeping and operating the
expensive processing equipment in one central area.
 Achieve greater uniformity by standardizing techniques
of operation.
 Gain a higher level of efficiency.
Functions of CSSD Department

• Receiving and sorting soiled materials used in the hospital

• Determining whether the item should be reused or discarded

• Process of decontamination or disinfection prior to

sterilization

• Carrying out specialized cleaning of equipment and supplies

• Inspecting and testing instruments, equipment and linen.

Continuation - Functions of CSSD Department

• Assembling treatment trays, instrument sets, linen packs etc.

• Packing all materials for sterilizing – laminated film pouch,

linen
• Labelling and dating materials
• Loading
• Sterilizing
• Unloading and cooling
• Storing and controlling inventory
• Issuing and distributing
What are the importance in determining the location of CSSD
• Accessibility to elevators, dumbwaiters and stairs
• Should be close to the dept.’s which use its services the most
• Adjoining the dept.’s from which it receives materials such as general store,
linen store and laundry
• Ideally be located in the “service core”
• Located in a lower floor directly under the surgical suite.
• Surgical dept. and CSSD are connected with two dedicated dumbwaiters – one
sterile and other soiled.
• Sterile dumbwaiter located in the sterile area and open to the sterile area of the
surgical suite
Design

• Receiving and clean up area are physically separated from the rest of the dept.

• Separate entrance to receive soiled and contaminated materials from other dept.
and another for issuing clean and sterile supplies and instruments.

• Separate entrance to receive materials from general store and laundry

Different zones in CSSD dept.:
• Soiled area:
- Soiled items received at the soild reception area.
- Steam and hot water are the most common disinfection agents used in hospitals.
• Clean Area

- Fabrics are sorted out and packed in a separate area before
sterilization.
- Materials are loaded in the clean area
• Sterile area
- After sterilization the materials are unloaded and stored in the
sterile area.
- storage area should be dry.
Procedures
- Cleaning and washing of instruments, trays etc. It may be either manually or by
automatic washers.

4. Special trays for radiology
- Instruments used regularly are assessmbled to make pre-wrapped kits and
stocked or they prepared when needed as per order. Combination of both
methods is common.

- Sterilization is done in batches, that means several packages are sterilized in a
