GRAPHICS

The term computer graphics was first used in

the 1960s. William Fetter used it to describe the
new design method for Boeing. Also, Ivan
Sutherland, “The Father of Computer Graphics”
developed a program called Sketchpad- the first
extensive interactive drawing program.
Graphics can be created through digital
imaging. It refers to illustrations, artworks,
charts, diagrams, paintings, photographs,
cartoons, etc. It can be found in publishing,
education, entertainment and advertising- some
fields that utilize graphics to convey messages,
ideas and concepts.
Graphics as a communication tool is used to:
• Grab the attention of the audience.
• Add visual appeal to the message.
• Simplify complex information.
• Clarify concepts and ideas behind the message.
• Represent abstract concepts.
• Enhance learning and reading enjoyment.
• Can be used to replace text (a picture paints a
thousand words.)

Two Major Categories of
Computer Graphics

• Vector Graphics
• Bitmap Graphics
VECTOR GRAPHICS
• A vector is a representation that has
magnitude and direction. It has two
end points on the xy matrix.
• Created through the use of drawing
software such as Adobe Illustrator and
CorelDRAW.
• Ideal for creating logos, diagrams,
fonts, etc.
Vector graphics cannot be captured, but it is
generated through the use of vector graphics
software. Below is the list of the common vector
graphics file formats:
• AI- Adobe Illustrator File
• CDR- CorelDRAW drawing
• CGM- Computer Graphics Metafile (old universal format)
• DWG- AutoCAD drawing
• EPS- Encapsulated PostScript
• PFB- Adobe Font; mainly used in Apple Macintosh
• SVG- Scalable Vector Graphics (latest universal format)
• TTF- True Type Font
• WMF- Windows Metafile (MS Windows native format)
• EMF- Enhanced Metafile
Examples of Vector Graphics
BITMAP GRAPHICS
• Also known as raster graphics, store
and display images as a series of dots
that are arranged in column and rows.
• These dots represent as pixels (short
for picture elements).
• Each pixels also represent a particular
color, depending on the color mode
that are used.
Bitmap graphics have several file formats:

• BMP- Uncompressed Bitmap (can be used as

wallpaper but has a huge file size)
• GIF- Graphic Interchange Format
• JPEG- Joint Photographic Experts Group
• TIFF- Tagged Image File Format
• PNG- Portable Network Graphics
Examples of Bitmap Graphics
Image Size and Resolution
Size- refers to the physical
dimension of the image or the
number of pixels contained in an
image.

Resolution- refers to the density

of pixel in an inch.

Total Total Pixels= Pixel-Width*Pixel-

Number of Height
Pixels
Resolution=PW/Width
Size of an Resolution=PH/Height
1. The size of an image is 6in x 8in
and its resolution is 300 ppi.
Compute for the total number of
pixels.

PW= Width*Resolution PH=

Height*Resolution
= 6in*300ppi =
8in*300ppi
= 1800 pixels =
2. An image contains 300pixels x
400pixels and has a resolution of 72
ppi. What is the width and height of
the image?

Width= PW/Resolution Height=

PH/Resolution
= 300pixels/72ppi
= 400pixels/72ppi
= 4.17inches
= 5.56inches

Input Stage involves the tasks of capturing images and

transforming the images into a format that the computer
understand.
Image Manipulation involves the tasks of altering, enhancing,
combining and analyzing digital images.
Output Stage includes the tasks of displaying image on a screen,
printing the image on paper or recording digital images on a
