Introduction to

Networks

M.S.Shashank
Grade VIII, A Section
Networks
• A computer Network is a collection of interconnected computers that are
equipped to exchange information and share resources with each other

• Data can be transmitted from one location to another through wires or

without wires
Wired Networking technology
Data is transmitted by using wires or cables. The different types are:
1. Co-axial Cable consist of a central copper wire surrounded by a
conductive sleeve. There are two types of co-axial cables
– Baseband cable- Capable of transferring one signal at a time
– Broadband Cable-Capable of transmitting multiple signals at a time
• It is preferred as it is less costly and can carry data for a long distance at a
time
2. Ethernet Cables is used to connect two network devices directly. It has
eight wires of which four are used for data transfer. It has two kinds of
wiring schema
– Patch cable- Connect a computer to a hub or a switch
– Crossover cable- Connects two computer without a hub or a switch
• Advantage of Ethernet cable is it consumes less power
Wired Networking technology
3. Optical fiber cable is a thin strand of light conducting glass fibre. Multiple
strands are bundled together in a opaque jacket. Data is transmitted in the
form of light signals.
• They are lightweight and have high data transmission speed
• They provide high bandwidth and suffer low signal loss
Wireless Networking technology

In this network technology data is transmitted without wires or cables. The

different technologies are:
1. Bluetooth
Bluetooth provides a low-power radio wave to connect with electronic devices
transmitted by Bluetooth chip.
• It is used for shot range communication of an approximate 10 meters
• It connects up to 8 devices and its most common used application is Mobile data.
• It has slow data transfer rate
2. Infrared
This technology uses an infrared wave to connect electronic devices.
• It can connect only two devices at a time
• It works only short range covering approximately 5 metres
• It works in line of sight and cannot cross any solid object
• It is most commonly in TV remotes and cordless phones, it is checked that it works by
seeing if the LED is emitting light
Wireless Networking technology
3. Wi-Fi
It stands for wireless fidelity; it uses radio-waves to provide high speed
wireless network connections. It is owned by an organization called Wi-Fi
Alliance, it is a two way radio communication.
• Many devices laptops, mobiles, video game consoles are connected using
Wi-Fi
• Advantages- You can connect to the internet anytime and anywhere, you
can connect multiple devices through Wi-Fi.
• Disadvantages-It has a limited range and is slower than wired
communications
Types of Network
1. PAN- Personal Area Network It is a network of communicating device; it
can cover an area of an approximate 10 meters. It includes MP3 and 4
players, phones, computers etc.
2. LAN- Local Area Network It is a computer network has spans an area
confined to a building or a group of buildings which has a server
connected to the other computers.
3. WAN-Wide Area Network It usually refers to a network that covers a
very large geographical area which may span a country, a continent or
even the world. It includes Government, Military, Corporate ,Public
Networks
4. MAN-Metropolitan Area Network It covers a larger area than LAN but a
smaller area than WAN, the data network is designed to span for a city or
town.
5. CAN-Campus Area Network It is a interconnection of LAN within a limited
geographical area such as school campus, military base, banks etc.
