UNIT - IV

PRINCIPLES OF SITE LAYOUT AND DEVELOPMENT

ORGANISATION OF VEHICULAR
CIRCULATION
 Circulation systems
facilitate linkages that
relate activities in space
 Traffic flow, parking facilities
and pedestrian flow are
essentially part of a pattern
of flows of people
 The vehicular system is a
primary element in
structuring a site plan
 The major pattern of
networks are the grid,
radial, linear, organic and
combinations of these
COMPARISION OF AREAS USED FOR
STREETS
ORGANISATION OF PEDESTRIAN
CIRCULATION
 Walking is still the most frequent means of movement for many people,
particularly the young and the elderly
 Like a flow of water, pedestrian movement has a fluid momentum
 Pedestrians will follow the line of least resistance, shorteneing distances
by cutoffs, sweeping wide on curves, eddying about obstacles, and
forming pools above and below restircitive channels such as stairs or
corridors
 Pedestrians may be purposeful(walking to work)or they may be
casual(taking a Sunday afternoon stroll)
 The plan provides a safe pedestrian environment by separating the
pedestrian and vehicular systems
CLASSIFICATION OF ROAD SYSTEMS
 PRIMARY SYSTEM
Expressways and National Highways
 SECONDARY SYSTEM
State Highways and Major District Roads
 TERTIARY SYSTEM OR RURAL ROADS
Other District Road and Village Roads
HIERARCHY OF ROADS
 The major classification of roads as per hierarchy is of 2 types:
1. INTER-CITY ROADS
2. INTRA-CITY ROADS
INTER-CITY ROADS
The roads connecting in between 2 cities. There are various categories of
intercity roads, like:
(a) Expressways: Having high density uninterrupted traffic with speed
100-120 Kmph. No parking is allowed on these roads.
(b) National Highway: ROW: 50-60 m. Roadway: 9-12 m.
(c) District Roads: ROW: 25-30 m. Roadway: 9 m.
(d) Village Roads: ROW: 10 m. Roadway: 7.5 m
INTRA – CITY ROADS
The roads which are within the city limits. The various categories of Intra
city roads are:
 Arterial Road – A continuous route for through traffic. Road Width –
50-60m
 Sub-Arterial Road – A continuous route for through traffic but
offering a lower level of traffic mobility than the arterial roads. Road
Width – 30 – 40m.
 Collector Street – These roads are meant for collecting and
distributing traffic from and to local streets and also for providing access
to arterial streets. Road Width – 20 – 30m.
 Local Street – A street primarily for access to residences, business or
other abutting property. Road Width – 10 – 20m.

PARKING
TYPES OF PARKING
ON STREET The area allotted for Parking purpose at
PARKING sides of the roads.
• Angular Parking
• Parallel Parking
• Perpendicular Parking

OFF STREET Parking area is designed adjacent to the

PARKING road or a place or a building
• Parking Lots
• Multi level Car parking (MLCP)
