effects of Juvenile Delinquency ?
What is Juvenile Delinquency ?
Juvenile Delinquency is the involvement of young people in illegal, criminal or antisocial behaviour.
Shoplifting, drug trafficking vandalism and burglary are some crimes committed by Juvenile
Delinquents. Some factors that contribute to Juvenile Delinquency are negative peer pressure, poverty, a
dysfunctional family. Effects of Juvenile Delinquency are increased crime rates, social stigmatization and
limited future educational and career opportunities.

Causes of Juvenile Delinquency

Juvenile Delinquency is oftenly traced back to three causes that exerts a significant influence on a
young person’s life. Firstly, a dysfunctional family greatly contributes to delinquent behaviour. Growing
up in a house hold with conflict, instability or neglect disrupts a child’s emotional and social
development. Furthermore, living in poverty with limited education and poor healthcare, young
individuals resort to criminal activities as a means of survival. Lastly, negative peer pressure is a very
strong contributor to Juvenile Delinquency because the desire to be accepted in a group can mislead
adolescents into crime, influenced by the values of their associates.

Effects of Juvenile Delinquency


Juvenile Delinquency exerts a variety of consequences on the Juvenile Delinquent and the society.
Young criminals are oftenly encounter judgement and bias which hinders their ability to be reintroduced
in society. Moreover, crime rates are increased because it creates a cycle of consistent criminal behavior
pose a threat to community safety and businesses. Furthermore, criminal records obtained by the youth
creates a barrier to education and employment. This will require rehabilitation efforts and social support
to reshape the trajectory of the young person’s life.

In conclusion, Juvenile Delinquency is a serious issue in our society. Juvenile Delinquency not only
affects the individual, however the society and family are also affected.

Causes of Juvenile Delinquency


Juvenile Delinquency starts with negative influence and the environment the young individual is obliged to participate in
Delinquent acts. Additionally, Socialization at school impacts children cognitive development and how children relate to each
other. Furthermore, The home environment leads to Juvenile delinquency if there is poor parental guidance to inform children
about right from wrong. Moreover, the most common cause of Juvenile Delinquency is poor parenting because the parents of
the child are usually the major influencers in a child’s life.

Effects Of Juvenile Delinquency

Juvenile Delinquency not only affects the individual, but it also affects other children by lowering their self esteem and
making them more fearful because when children are being influenced or pressured into participating in delinquent acts, they
may feel obligated to conform to belong in the social group which negatively reshapes the way they perceive themselves.
Moreover, Juvenile Delinquency leads to increased crime rates and less investments and earning of profit because, criminal
acts puts strain on financial resources for business because business owners have to contend with property damage and
vandalism from Juvenile Delinquents. Furthermore, there are less investment opportunities because due to increased crime
rates caused by more young people partaking in criminal acts, investors are discouraged and fearful of investing in the
affected areas of Juvenile Delinquency. Lastly, the most common effects of Juvenile Delinquency are new gangs emerging,
Gang violence and increase in drug use.

Solutions of Juvenile Delinquency


More parental involvement and establishing programs for communication style and positive youth development are great
ways of solving Juvenile Delinquency. This is because parents are able to provide advice for the child and provide good
guidance to their child to better their decision making. Moreover, programs about positive youth development are paramount
in reshaping the child’s future and values so that they can improve themselves.
Three Recommendations on how Juvenile Delinquency can be dealt within the
community

 Mentoring Programs- establishing mentoring initiatives to connect at risk children with positive role models who can provide guidance and support.

 Education and Skill Development Sessions- enhanced educational and skill development opportunities to provide children with tools such as online courses,
which are needed for a better future.
