Momentum of Photon
• Einstein extended the photon concept from law of conservation of energy to law of conservation
of momentum

• Photons & Electromagnetic Waves

• Photon is a particle of electromagnetic energy whose rest mass is zero.

• A photon can move with only the speed of light, neither less nor more.
• A photon has only kinetic energy and does not have potential energy.
• The energy of a photon is: E = hf = hc/λ (h is Plank’s constant, f is the frequency & λ is the
wavelength of the wave associated with the photon).
• The linear momentum of a photon is:
According to the theory of relativistic energy

We know that, for a photon

Wave Particle Duality
• Electro magnetic waves (light) wave has both particle and wave nature
• Light interference , reflection, refraction, diffraction  wave nature
• Black body radiation, photoelectric effect, Compton effect  particle nature.

Wave nature of Matter:

Louis de Broglie extended the concept of dual nature to the matter. (Davisson-Germer experiment)

De-Broglie’s wavelength:

Equating both
=
De Broglie wavelength of a charged particle (Electron) :
If a particle of charge q and mass m, that is initially at rest, is accelerated through a potential difference ‘V’ so that it
moves with non-relativistic speed v then its kinetic energy is given as:
MATTER WAVES AND THEIR CHARACTERISTIC PROPERTIES

Unlike electromagnetic waves, the matter waves have following properties:

1. The wavelength of matter wave is inversely proportional to mass of the particle. Hence larger the mass of the
particle, shorter will be the wavelength and vice versa.
2. The wavelength of matter wave is inversely proportional to velocity of the particle. Hence greater the
velocity of the particle, smaller will be the wavelength and vice versa.
3. The amplitude of the de-Broglie wave varies with likelihood of detecting the particle at a particular position.
Hence the matter wave is termed as probability wave.
4. When a particle is in motion, two different velocities are associated with it. They are mechanical motion of
particle (vparticle) and motion of associated matter wave (vphase).

Group Speed and Phase Speed (Not in exam point of view)
• When a group of a very large number of waves, having equal amplitudes but slightly different frequencies and slightly
different wavelengths, superpose with each other, they give rise to a wave packet.

• A wave packet is characterized by two different speeds.

(i) Phase Speed: it is the speed of the individual wave front moves

(ii) Group Speed: The envelope of group of waves travels through space with a different speed than the individual waves.
This speed is called the group speed. ()
