INTRODUCTION

Academic writing comes in various forms. The most


common form is the essay form inasmuch as subjective or
essay tests form part of quizzes and examinations, which
are graded student activities. The essays are written
according to their respective patterns of development.
Patterns of development consist of logical
arrangement of ideas which help the reader to follow ideas
and understand the text better.

There are different patterns by which
ideas are developed. In determining the pattern
of development of ideas in a text, note the
signal words used. These signal words may help
you identify the pattern of development, but it
is more important that you understand the
meaning of the text.
1.Descriptive pattern- basically provides
details on the idea by using either a sensory

explain the concepts by answering the question “What
does it mean?” This pattern explains the information
through the use of illustrations, examples, and
descriptions.

spamming, and pretexting.
3.Exemplification- presents general statement and then
provides specific and concrete examples to expound on the
main idea. This pattern is used to provide example of
something.
