INTRODUCTION

ON 6TH MAY 2024, OUR GROUP VISITED ASSAM UNIVERSITY, SILCHAR. THE PURPOSE OF THE
VISIT WAS TO GAIN INSIGHTS ON ANIMAL HOUSE, ITS MAINTENANCE AND SET, AND ALSO
ON BREEDING TECHNIQUES, CARE OF NORMAL AND EXPERIMENTAL ANIMALS.
ANIMAL HOUSE

Animal culture or breeding facilities, often referred

to as animal houses, are specialized environments
designed to provide optimal conditions for the
housing, breeding, and experimentation of animals.
Operations and Infrastructure
ANIMAL HOUSES ARE EQUIPPED WITH SPECIALIZED INFRASTRUCTURE TO CATER TO THE NEEDS OF VARIOUS
SPECIES. KEY COMPONENTS INCLUDE:-

1. HOUSING UNITS: THESE ARE DESIGNED TO MIMIC NATURAL HABITATS AS CLOSELY AS POSSIBLE WHILE
ALLOWING RESEARCHERS EASY ACCESS FOR OBSERVATION AND EXPERIMENTAL MANIPULATION.

2. BREEDING AREAS: FACILITIES OFTEN INCLUDE DEDICATED SPACES FOR BREEDING PROGRAMS TO
MAINTAIN GENETIC DIVERSITY AND ENSURE A STABLE SUPPLY OF EXPERIMENTAL SUBJECTS.

3. VETERINARY CARE: ANIMAL WELFARE IS A PRIORITY, SO FACILITIES EMPLOY VETERINARIANS AND ANIMAL
CARE STAFF TO MONITOR HEALTH, ADMINISTER TREATMENTS, AND ENSURE HUMANE TREATMENT
THROUGHOUT THE ANIMALS' LIVES.

4. STERILE ENVIRONMENTS: CLEANLINESS AND HYGIENE ARE CRITICAL TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION AND
ENSURE THE VALIDITY OF RESEARCH FINDINGS.

5. REGULATORY COMPLIANCE: ANIMAL HOUSES ADHERE TO STRICT REGULATIONS AND ETHICAL GUIDELINES
IMPOSED BY GOVERNMENT BODIES AND INSTITUTIONAL ETHICS COMMITTEES. THESE GUIDELINES GOVERN
ANIMAL WELFARE, EXPERIMENTAL PROTOCOLS, AND THE HUMANE TREATMENT OF ANIMALS.
Ethical consideration
THE USE OF ANIMALS IN RESEARCH RAISES ETHICAL CONCERNS, WHICH ARE CAREFULLY
CONSIDERED AND ADDRESSED WITHIN ANIMAL HOUSE. ETHICAL PRINCIPLES INCLUDE:

1. MINIMIZATION OF HARM: RESEARCHERS STRIVE TO MINIMIZE PAIN, DISTRESS, AND

DISCOMFORT TO ANIMALS THROUGH REFINED EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES AND
ANESTHESIA WHEN NECESSARY.

2. REPLACEMENT, REDUCTION, REFINEMENT (3RS): THIS PRINCIPLE GUIDES

RESEARCHERS TO REPLACE ANIMALS WITH ALTERNATIVE METHODS WHERE POSSIBLE,
REDUCE THE NUMBER OF ANIMALS USED, AND REFINE EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES TO
MINIMIZE SUFFERING.

3. ETHICS COMMITTEES: INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL CARE AND USE COMMITTEES (IACUCS)

OVERSEE AND APPROVE ALL RESEARCH INVOLVING ANIMALS, ENSURING COMPLIANCE
WITH ETHICAL STANDARDS AND LEGAL REQUIREMENTS.
MICE

Scientific classification

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Rodentia
Family: Muridae
Genus: Mus
Species: musculus
Mice culture
MICE ARE AMONG THE MOST WIDELY USED ANIMALS
IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH DUE TO THEIR GENETIC
SIMILARITY TO HUMANS, SHORT REPRODUCTIVE
CYCLES, AND EASE OF HANDLING. MICE SERVE AS
INVALUABLE MODELS IN BIOMEDICAL
RESEARCH FOR STUDYING GENETICS,
PHYSIOLOGY, BEHAVIOUR, AND DISEASE
MECHANISMS. THEIR GENETIC MAKEUP CAN
BE MANIPULATED TO MIMIC HUMAN
DISEASES, MAKING THEM ESSENTIAL FOR
TESTING NEW DRUGS, UNDERSTANDING
BIOLOGICAL PATHWAYS, AND DEVELOPING
THERAPIES.
BREEDING PROTOCOL
Breeding programs in mouse research facilities are meticulously
managed to ensure genetic diversity and a sustainable supply of
research subjects. Key aspects include:
Genetic Diversity: Maintaining diverse genetic backgrounds
within breeding colonies to account for variations in responses
to experimental conditions.
Strain Selection: Choosing specific strains of mice that best
model the disease or condition being studied, considering
factors such as susceptibility to disease and genetic traits.
Reproductive Management: Optimizing breeding cycles and
pairings to maximize the number of offspring and control
genetic characteristics.
Health Monitoring: Regular health screenings and genetic testing
to detect and manage potential diseases and genetic mutations
within colonies.
HOUSING AND ENVIORNMENT
The housing conditions for research mice are designed to ensure
their welfare while meeting scientific and ethical standards:
Cage Design: Mice are typically housed in cages with bedding
material for nesting and enrichment items such as tunnels,
wheels, and chew toys to encourage natural behaviors.
Temperature and Humidity: Controlled environments to
maintain optimal conditions (e.g., 20-26°C, 40-60%
humidity) suitable for mouse health and reproduction.
Lighting: Light-dark cycles that mimic natural conditions to
regulate circadian rhythms and reproductive cycles.
Hygiene and Sanitation: Regular cleaning schedules to
prevent disease transmission and maintain a clean
environment.
Kingdom: Animalia
ZEBRAFISH
Phylum: Chordata
Class:
Actinopterygii
Order:
Cypriniformes
Family:
Cyprinidae
Subfamily:
Danioninae
Genus:
Danio

Species: rerio
Zebrafish culture
ZEBRAFISH HAVE BECOME A
PROMINENT MODEL ORGANISM IN
BIOMEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC
RESEARCH DUE TO THEIR GENETIC
SIMILARITY TO HUMANS, RAPID
DEVELOPMENT, AND TRANSPARENT
EMBRYOS.
Breeding technique
EFFECTIVE BREEDING PROGRAMS ARE CRUCIAL FOR MAINTAINING ZEBRAFISH COLONIES WITH
DIVERSE GENETIC BACKGROUNDS:

1. PAIRING AND SPAWNING: ZEBRAFISH ARE TYPICALLY KEPT IN GROUPS WITH CONTROLLED
RATIOS OF MALES TO FEMALES. BREEDING PAIRS ARE SELECTED BASED ON GENETIC
DIVERSITY AND DESIRED TRAITS.

2. EMBRYO COLLECTION: EGGS ARE COLLECTED SHORTLY AFTER SPAWNING AND INCUBATED
IN A SEPARATE TANK UNDER CONTROLLED CONDITIONS UNTIL HATCHING.

3. REARING FRY: NEWLY HATCHED LARVAE (FRY) ARE FED WITH APPROPRIATE FOOD (E.G.,
LIVE BRINE SHRIMP, COMMERCIAL DIETS) TO SUPPORT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.

4. GENETIC MANAGEMENT: REGULAR GENETIC SCREENING AND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

ENSURE THE MAINTENANCE OF DIVERSE GENETIC STOCKS AND PREVENT INBREEDING.
Housing and enviornment
ZEBRAFISH REQUIRE SPECIFIC HOUSING CONDITIONS
TO SUPPORT THEIR HEALTH AND REPRODUCTION:

1. AQUARIUM DESIGN: TANKS ARE EQUIPPED WITH

FILTRATION SYSTEMS TO MAINTAIN WATER
QUALITY (E.G., TEMPERATURE, PH, AMMONIA
LEVELS) SUITABLE FOR ZEBRAFISH.

2. LIGHTING AND PHOTOPERIOD: LIGHT-DARK

CYCLES ARE REGULATED TO MIMIC NATURAL
CONDITIONS AND MAINTAIN CIRCADIAN
RHYTHMS.

3. ENRICHMENT: ENVIRONMENTAL ENRICHMENT,

SUCH AS PLANTS AND STRUCTURES, PROVIDES
HIDING PLACES AND STIMULATES NATURAL
BEHAVIOURS.

4. HYGIENE: REGULAR WATER CHANGES AND TANK

CLEANING PREVENT THE BUILDUP OF WASTE AND
PATHOGENS, ENSURING A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT.
conclusion
ANIMAL HOUSES ARE VITAL FOR SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS, PROVIDING
CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENTS WHERE ANIMALS ARE CULTURED FOR
RESEARCH PURPOSES UNDER RIGOROUS ETHICAL GUIDELINES AND WITH A
STRONG FOCUS ON ANIMAL WELFARE. THESE FACILITIES PLAY A CRUCIAL
ROLE IN ADVANCING MEDICAL TREATMENTS, UNDERSTANDING DISEASE
MECHANISMS, AND DEVELOPING NEW TECHNOLOGIES. BY ADHERING TO
STRICT REGULATIONS AND ETHICAL STANDARDS, RESEARCHERS ENSURE
THAT ANIMAL RESEARCH IS CONDUCTED RESPONSIBLY AND CONTRIBUTES
MEANINGFULLY TO SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE.
