Power Point Presentation

On
Study of animal house

Guided by: Presented by:

Dr. Sweety Nath Barbhuiya Fahima Begum
HOD & assistant professor B.Sc six semester (Zoology Hons)
Department of Zoology Regn No: 20210013749

Visited Assam University’s Animal
House
Animal house:
 Animal house means a place
where animals are reared /kept
for experiments or testing
purpose.
 The environment in which an
animal lives must provide
water, food, shelter, and space.
Setting up of animal house:

 Housing facilities where animals are kept

should be approximately staffed, designed,
constructed, equipped and maintained to
achieve a high standard of animal care and
should fulfill scientific requirements.
 Housing and management practices should be
designed to provide a high standard of animal
care.
 The standard of animal care should be
maintained over weekends and holidays.
 Emergency care procedure should be available
at all times.
Mice: Importance in research

 Very similar to human.

 Easy to keep, have a short generation time and
can be produced in large number.
 Small in size and generally cost less to maintain.
 Mice experience many of the same diseases as
humans and have the same types of organs and
bodily system, which makes them excellent
models for human disease.
Scientific classification of
Mice:

Kingdom - Animalia
Phylum - Chordata
Class – Mammalia
Order - Rodentia
Family – Muridae
Genus - Mus
species - musculus
Breeding techniques of mice:

 There are two breeding schemes: polygamous –

placing a single male with multiple females, and
monogamous – a single male with a single
female.
 Most mice reach sexual maturity at 4-7 weeks of
age.
 For best results, house stud males individually for
one to two weeks and then add females to the
males cage.
 A typical female mouse can birth between 5 and
10 litters per year.
Feeding requirements for mice:

 Commercial mouse food - recommend nuggets.

These will give mice a complete and balanced
diet.
 Small amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables – as
part of their daily allowance and not in addition.
 Portions of their daily food allowance scattered
around the cage to encourage foraging
behaviour.
Zebrafish: Significance in research
Scientific Classification of Zebrafish:

Kingdom : Animalia
Phylum : Chordata
Class : Actinopterygii
Order : Cypriniforms
Family : Cyprinidae
Genus : Danio
Species : rerio
Breeding techniques:
Daphnia: Significance in research
 Used as model organism for fresh water toxicity
testing .
 Have a rapid parthenogenetic reproductive cycle .
 Essential part of the food Web in lakes and ponds.
 Allows for the creation of rather simple experiments.
Scientific name: Daphnia
magna
Scientific Classification of Daphnia :

Kingdom : Animalia
Phylum : Arthropoda
Class : Branchiopoda
Order : Anomopoda
Family : Daphniidae
Genus : Daphnia
Species : magna
