Computer Basics

• A computer is an electronic machine that stores,

retrieves and process data
• It can not think or reason; it can carry out instructions
given to it
• Ability to accept, store and execute program makes the
computer an invaluable and all purpose business tool

Computer Basics

Processing /
Input Output
Computation

Tanvir Ahammad Dept. of CSE, JnU

Computer Basics

• Accepts input, processes data, stores data, and

produces output
• Input refers to whatever is sent to a Computer system
• Data refers to the symbols that represent facts, objects,
and ideas
• Processing is the way that a computer manipulates data
• A computer processes data in a device called the
central processing unit (CPU)

Tanvir Ahammad Dept. of CSE, JnU

Computer Basics

• Memory is an area of a computer that holds data that is

waiting to be processed, stored, or output
• Storage is the area where data can be left on a
permanent basis
• Computer output is the result produced by the
computer
• An output device displays, prints or transmits the results
of processing

Organization of a computer system

1. Hardware 4. Procedures
2. Software 5. Humanware / People
3. Data/ Information 6. Communications

Tanvir Ahammad Dept. of CSE, JnU

Hardware

• Refers to machine or physical equipment

• Compromises the electronic and the electromechanical
parts of the computer system
• Can be
– On-line
• Ex. Keyboard, Mouse etc
– Off –line
• Ex. Printer, Scanner etc.

Tanvir Ahammad Dept. of CSE, JnU

Software

• Instructions that tell the hardware how to perform a task

• Is a sequence of instructions, which directs a computer to
perform certain functions
• Categorized as
– System Software
– Application Software

Tanvir Ahammad Dept. of CSE, JnU

Data
• Raw, unprocessed facts
• Processing creates information
• Stored electronically in files
– Document files
– Worksheet files
– Database files
– Presentation files

1-20 Tanvir Ahammad Dept. of CSE, JnU

Data/ Information
Data Information
raw, unanalyzed facts, figures and useful knowledge derived from the
events data

Information is data that has been

processed in such a way as to be
Data is raw material for processing.
meaningful to the person who
receives it.

Example
If you had a sum:
123+123 = 246
(this is your data) (this is now your information)

Tanvir Ahammad Dept. of CSE, JnU

Procedures

• Descriptions of how things are done

• Appear in documentation manual, which contain the
guidelines for using the hardware and software

Tanvir Ahammad Dept. of CSE, JnU

Humanware

• Refers to the persons who design, program and operate a

computer
• Categorized as
– System Analyst
– Programmer
– End User

Tanvir Ahammad Dept. of CSE, JnU

Communications

• Becomes an element of the computer system when one

computer system is set up to share data and information
electronically with another computer system.

Tanvir Ahammad Dept. of CSE, JnU

Computer Application

• Education
• Banking System
• Business & Marketing
• Government
• Entertainment
