UNDERSTANDING THE Mathematics - Year 7
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN The English Academy
Teacher: John Amos MULTIPLES, FACTORS, AND Date: September 5th, PRIMES 2024 LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: 1. Understand the concepts of multiples, factors, and prime numbers. 2. Differentiate between multiples, factors, and prime numbers. 3. Apply this knowledge to solve mathematical problems. STARTER ACTIVITY - NUMBER BUZZ GAME Activity Description: Students stand in a circle and count in sequence. When a multiple of a chosen number (e.g., 3) comes up, the student says 'Buzz' instead of the number. Instructions: If a student gets it wrong, they are out. The game continues until one student remains. UNDERSTANDING MULTIPLES Definition: A multiple of a number is the product of that number and an integer. Example: Multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, etc. UNDERSTANDING FACTORS Definition: A factor is a number that divides another number exactly without leaving a remainder. Example: Factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. UNDERSTANDING PRIME NUMBERS Definition: A prime number is a number greater than 1 that has no positive divisors other than 1 and itself. Example: Prime numbers include 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, etc. PRACTICE ACTIVITY - FIND THE MULTIPLES AND FACTORS Instructions: Work in pairs to list the multiples and factors of given numbers (e.g., 15, 20, 28). Discuss and compare your findings with another pair. REFLECTION AND DISCUSSION Questions for Reflection: What is the difference between a multiple and a factor? Can a number be both a factor and a multiple? Provide examples. Why are prime numbers important in mathematics? EXIT TICKET Instructions: Write down one new thing you learned today and one question you still have. Hand in your exit ticket as you leave the classroom. SUMMARY AND HOMEWORK Summary: We have learned about multiples, factors, and prime numbers and how to differentiate between them. Homework: Complete the worksheet on identifying multiples, factors, and prime numbers for further practice.
