INTRODUCTION

CONTROL CIRCUITS OF CONVENSIONAL

LOCOMOTIVE
ARE AS FOLLOWS:
 Pantograph Control Circuit
 D J Control Circuit
 Auxiliary Control Circuit
PANTOGRAPH CONTROL CIRCUITS

 For raising the pantograph, minimum pressure i.e. of

8 8kg/cm2 is required.
 To create pressure MCPA is actuated.
 Two switch viz. ZPT1 and ZPT2 are provided in both
cabs.
 On operating ZPT from any cab, according to the pos-
ition of ZPT the concerning VEPT energises and al-
lows pressure to the panto servo motor and when
8kg/cm2 air pressure is admitted into the panto servo
motor the pantograph raises, but for this concerning
VEPT cut out cock must remain open.
PANTOGRAPH CONTROL CIRCUIT
Introduction to DJ control circuit

Supply of voltage from OHE to main trans-

former is obtained and maintained after the DJ
is closed and so long it remains closed.
 No power circuit can work without voltage from
OHE so, for the functioning of all power circuit
equipment DJ is required to be closed first and
then it is be maintained in the closed position.
So this circuit can be called the lifeline of the
locomotive.
DJ Control circuit
Q118 RELAY

Q118 is a auxiliary protection relay.

It monitors all auxiliaries for their healthy
functioning.
This relay gets energized as soon as HBA
is operated.
The relay has 5 sec delay i.e. even after
the cut of control voltage the relay will re-
main actuated for 5 sec.
Q118 BRANCH
Q45 RELAY

 Q-45 Relay is called DJ resetting Relay and GR-0 ensur-

ing Relay.
 It gets energized when BLDJ is closed; ZPT other than 0
position, BLRDJ pressed provided CCBA, CCPT and
CCDJ in healthy condition and GR on 0 position.
 This relay has two NO interlocks in DJ control circuit
i. Q44 branch.
ii. C-118 branch
 This relay gets de energized when DJ is closed
Q45 BRANCH
Q44 RELAY
 This relay is called Transmission Relay and RGR
Protection Relay.
 This Relay gets energized when relay Q-45 energized
on pressing BLRDJ
 It has NO interlock on MTDJ, EFDJ and C118.
 The Q30 has the NO interlock on the branch of this
relay which gets closed when DJ is closed.
Q44 BRANCH
Q44 BRANCH
C118 Contactor

When this coil energizes the electromagnetic

contactor (single phase) C-118 closes, which in-
troduces starting phase to ARNO.
C118 gets energizes through Q45 relay and Q44
relay.
When the ARNO reaches the sufficient speed, it
actuates QCVAR and in turn de-energises C118.
MTDJ Coil

MTDJ is DJ maintaining coil and is also respon-

sible of opening of DJ
This coil gets actuated through NO of the Q44.
The energization of this coil stops the air supply
from RDJ to the DJ servo motor
Once the DJ is closed, it will be maintained in
close position as long as this coil remains ener-
gized.
EFDJ Coil

This is the closing coil of the DJ

This coil gets actuated through NO of the Q44

and NO of C118.

When EFDJ energises air passage from RDJ to

DJ servomotor opens and DJ closes.
C118, EFDJ AND MTDJ BRANCH
AUXILIARY CONTROL CIRCUIT
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

 The control circuit of the auxiliary motors are con-

nected to 110 V dc supply from the battery circuit
and are protected by fuse CCA. The auxiliary mo-
tors can be started only if the main circuit breaker
DJ is closed. As soon as the auxiliary contacts of
the main circuit breaker DJ and relay QCVAR have
picked up, C118 contactor is de-energized and aux-
iliary interlock of C118 closes after delay of 5 sec,
and Q100 relay gets energized. Auxiliary interlock
of C118 contactor is having adjustable mechanical
time delay arrangement which closes with a delay
of 5 sec, after opening of contactor C118.
SEQUENCE OF CLOSING CONTACTORS
 After closing the main circuit breaker DJ, Arno
starts and the following switching operations take
place:
 MVSI1-2, MVSL1-2 and MPH start.
 Relay Q100 is energized after 5 sec, of Arno start-
ing.
 Main compressor starts as soon as Q-100 is ener-
gized. This is accomplished by closing of con-
tactors C101/ C102/C103.
 As soon as BLVMT is closed, contactor C-107
pulls in as interlock of Q100 is already closed,
MVRH, starts.
 Relay QTD105 is energized by closing of C107
and after about 5 secs. C105 closed thereby
starting T.M. blower No.1 (MVMT1)
 Closing of C105 is energizes QTD105 and
C106 is closed after 5 sec, of energisation of
QTD106 and T.M blower No.2 (MVMT2) starts.
AUTOMATIC STARTING OF COMPRESSOR
 After closing the switch BL1CP or BL2CP, the
coils of contactor
 C101, C102, C103 energize, provided the relay Q100
has picked up and HCP is on ‘‘Position 123".
 On closing of the contactor, the motors MCP 1-3 get
the 3-phase 380 V ± 22.5% supply from the Arno. As
soon as the pressure in the main compressed air line
raises to 10 kg/cm² the pressure switch contact RGCP
closes, disconnecting compressor contactor and con-
necting the compressor to through the unloading
valve. The compressor is reconnected to supply when
the pressure has dropped to below 8.5 kg/cm².
MANUAL STARTING OF COMPRESSOR
 BLCPD1/2 is used to start compressor directly,
that is without RGCP in the circuit. As RGCP is
not acting, the control of turning ON and OFF of
compressor is done manually by LP and/or ALP.
The compressor will remain functioning irre-
spective of pressure in the MR, so to ensure
safety; the excess pressure is exhausted
through safety valve.
MANUAL STARTING OF BLOWER
 As soon as BLVMT is closed, contactor C-107
pulls in as interlock of Q100 is already closed,
MVRH, starts.
 Relay QTD105 is energized by closing of C107
and after about 5 secs. C105 closed thereby
starting T.M. blower No.1 (MVMT1)
 Closing of C105 is energizes QTD105 and
C106 is closed after 5 sec, of energisation of
QTD106 and T.M blower No.2 (MVMT2) starts.
AUTOMATIC STARTING OF BLOWERS
 If the driver have forgotten to switch on BLVMT,
then as soon as reverser is thrown in forward or
reverse position and GR is on 1 to 32 position.

 C107 coil energizes and MVRH starts.

 Now through C107 NO interlock C107 coil is
maintained.
RELAYS USED IN AUXILIARY CONTROL
CIRCUIT
 Q100 auxiliary control relay, used to have con-
trol over auxiliary equipments.
 Q119 relay is used to initiate un-loader valves
and to have delay of 5 sec to start the compres-
sor no 3, to avoid overload of ARNO convertor.
 QTD105,106 are used to implant delay of 5 sec
in actuating of contactor C105 and C106 to
avoid overload of ARNO converter.
