OUTLINES

 Introduction
 Causes and Indication of kicks
 Methods for circulating out of a kick
(Standard killing methods; Driller’s method,
Engineer’s method).

3
ENGINEER’S METHOD
(WAIT AND WEIGHT METHOD)

 In the Engineer’s method kill mud circulation

is initiated as soon as possible, reducing the
drill pipe pressure as soon as heavy mud
enters the annulus.
 Driller’s method: Circulate kick out of hole
using old mud, Circulate old mud out of hole
using kill weight mud.
 Engineer’s method: Circulate kick out of 4

hole using kill weight mud.

ENGINEER’S METHOD PROCEDURES

1. Bring the pump to

kill rate using the
correct start up
procedure

5
ENGINEER’S METHOD PROCEDURES

2. Once a kill rate switch

to drill pipe pressure
which should be the
initial circulating
pressure(ICP)
 ICP = SIDPP + SCP
 This pressure must be
maintained until kill
mud reaches the rig
6
floor.
ENGINEER’S METHOD PROCEDURES

3. As kill mud is
pumped down the
drill string to the
bit the drill pipe
pressure must be
allowed to fall from
ICP to FCP

7
ENGINEER’S METHOD PROCEDURES

4. By the time kill

mud has reached
the bit, the drill
pipe pressure will
have fallen to FCP

8
ENGINEER’S METHOD PROCEDURES
5. Once kill mud has
entered the annulus
FCP is held
constant until kill
mud is back to the
surface.
 The casing pressure

will rise as the gas is

circulated up the
annulus and will drop
as the gas is
removed at the
9
surface
ENGINEER’S METHOD PROCEDURES

6. When the kill mud

is back to the
surface, the well
can be shut in.
Both SIDPP and
SICP should be
zero and there
should be no flow 10

from the well

COMMON THINGS IN BOTH
ENGINEER’S AND DRILLER’S
METHOD

1. Both are carried out at a constant pump

pressure rate.

2. Both are carried out at a slower pump rate

than used while drilling

3. Both use the choke to maintain constant

BHP

4. Both use the same methods to monitor and

control BHP
11
STEPS OF THE ENGINEER’S METHOD
FOR WELL CONTROL

 Shut in the well

 Allow pressure to stabilize and record

stabilized shut in casing pressure, initial shut

in drill pipe pressure, and pit gain

 Perform well control calculations

 Raise mud weight in the system to required

kill mud weight 12

STEPS OF THE ENGINEER’S METHOD
FOR WELL CONTROL

 Establish circulation to required kill rate by holding

casing pressure constant

 Follow drill pipe schedule until kill weight mud to the

bit

 Hold drill pipe pressure constant once kill mud weight

out of the bit until complete circulation

 Check mud weight out to ensure that mud weight is

equal to kill mud weight

 Shutdown and flow check to confirm if a well is static 13

PRESSURE PROFILE OF DRILLPIPE AND
CASING PRESSURE WHILE KILLING A WELL
WITH ENGINEER’S METHOD
 When kill mud weight is displaced in the well,
the drill pipe pressure drop as per the drill
pipe schedule.
 Once the kill weight mud is to the bit, drill
pipe pressure is maintained until the well is
killed
 A pressure profile will look like the following
chart

METHOD

15
PRESSURE PROFILE OF DRILLPIPE AND
CASING PRESSURE WHILE KILLING A WELL
WITH ENGINEER’S METHOD

 The casing pressure will increase because of

gas expansion while it is being circulated
 The maximum casing pressure occurs when
gas reaches at the surface.
 Then the casing pressure will drop rapidly
because gas is coming out on surfaces.

PRESSURE PROFILE OF DRILLPIPE AND
CASING PRESSURE WHILE KILLING A WELL
WITH ENGINEER’S METHOD

 Once the gas is totally removed from the

surface, there is still some casing pressure
due to original mud weight
 The casing pressure will gradually decrease
and drop to 0 psi when the kill mud reaches
to the surface which means that the well is
killed with the weighted mud.
