Learning Intention

We are learning about hardware and software

Success Criteria
I know hardware and software work together
I can explain what hardware and software is
I can describe what different components do
Can a computer work without a:

keyboard monitor

CPU speaker

microphone RAM
Hardware is the part of a computer that can be
touched.

But some of the hardware is inside the computer, so

we can only touch it if it is opened up to be fixed.

Just like there are many different types of speakers

or mice, the components that are inside a computer
can be different, too. Some are faster. Some can
store more data. They might look the same to us.
Why do you think some of the components are
inside the computer where we can’t touch them?

They use electricity, so it could be dangerous.

Some of them get very hot.

Many of the components inside the computer are

delicate – they are not very strong.
My computer has all its hardware, and electricity. It
still won’t work. What else do I need?
Software
What sort of software do you think I have to have?

If I just put Minecraft on it, will it work?

No!
What do I need?
There are two main types of software.

Application Software System Software

games, music System software is

players, paint the part that makes
programs, internet the computer go,
browsers, Word, that controls the
Excel, etc machine
Can you think of any types of system software?

Which of these do you know?

Most computers are sold with an operating system
installed. Mac computers have Mac OS. Most PCs
have Windows.
A computer is useless without an operating system.
The operating system tells the computer how to
control it, what to do when we input information,
and how it gives us the outputs.
Without an operating system on your computer, you
can’t even put a game on it.

The computer doesn’t know where to save

information, or how to read it.

If you don’t have an operating system, you can’t

even type!
An operating system tells the computer
This is a hard This is a
drive. Find mouse. It
(and save) controls the
information cursor on
here the screen

An operating system also tells the computer how to

display information to people using the computer.
Last week, when we made our computers, we drew
something like this to represent what was inside

This week, we are going to learn the names of some

of the components. It’s OK if you don’t remember
what they look like.
Without any of these, the computer won’t work.
CPU (Central Processing Unit) RAM
Does all the Holds the
thinking and data the
maths computer is
working on
Motherboard Power supply
Connects Sends the electricity
everything together to each part
Inside your computer you will also find
Fan and Graphics
heat sink card
Cools Improves
down the what we
computer see
Hard drive Sound card
Stores our files Lets us use
speakers and mic
Some of the hardware we don’t always need.
If I am not going to listen to music, then I don’t need
speakers or a sound card.

Some of the hardware we have to have.

If I don’t have a CPU or RAM, then my computer
won’t work
Software is the same.
Your parents might not play games, so they don’t
need Minecraft or Roblox

You love playing games, but without system

software, you can’t even run them
If you aren’t running the latest version
of Windows, then you can’t update Minecraft
