EXTENSION/SHORTENING OF A
BAR
Deformation in Uniform Circular Bar
• Consider a circular bar of uniformly tapering section as shown in figure below.
Let k =
⇒ d = d1 – kx
Thus, cross-sectional area of the bar at this section.
A = π /4 ……………………………………………(2)
Stress:
σ= P/π (d1 – kx)2/4 = 4P/π(d1 – kx)2 ……………….(3)
And Strain, ε = σ /E = 4P/πE(d1 – kx)2 ………………………………..(4)
Therefore, total extension of the bar may be found out by integrating the equation (5)
between the limits x = 0; x = L.
Example :
Find extension of tapering circular bar under axial pull for the following
data: d1 = 20mm, d2 = 40mm, L = 600mm, E = 200 GPa. P = 40kN
Solution
The elongation in tapered bar
dL = 4PL/(π E d1 d2)
Substitute the values in the above equation,
dL = 4x40,000x600 / (πx 200,000x20x40)
= 0.38mm. Ans.
• Example:
In the diagram shown below, a tensile load of 50 kN is applied axially. What is
the increase in length of the rectangular tapered plate of thickness 10 mm.
(Assume E = 220 Gpa)
A tapered circular rod of diameter varying from 20mm to 10mm is
connected to another uniform circular rod of diameter 10mm as shown
in the following figure. Both bars are made of same material with the
modulus of elasticity, E= 2x105MPa. When subjected to a load P=30 kN,
what will be the deflection at point A?
Example
The diameters of the brass and steel segments of the axially loaded bar shown in
Fig. below are 30 mm and 12 mm respectively. The diameter of the hollow section
of the brass segment is 20 mm. Determine: (i) The displacement of the free end; (ii)
The maximum normal stress in the steel and brass
Solution:
