Static VAR Compensator (SVC)

A Static VAR Compensator (SVC) is a shunt-connected power system device used for voltage
regulation, power factor correction, and stabilization of the electrical network. It dynamically
provides or absorbs reactive power by switching reactors or capacitors.
It is commonly utilized in high-voltage power transmission systems and large industrial plants to
maintain a stable voltage profile and improve power quality.
Type 1: Thyristor Switched Reactor (TSR)
•A simplified TSR circuit includes a thyristor valve connected
in series with a reactor and the electrical system.
Explanation:
•The thyristor controls the connection or disconnection of
the reactor to the grid.
•By varying firing angle of the thyristor, the reactive power
absorption of the reactor can be adjusted.
•Operates in steps, with precise switching to achieve desired
inductive compensation.
Advantages of TSR
1 Fast Response 2 High Reliability
TSR can respond quickly Thyristors are highly
to changes in reactive reliable components,
power, improving system ensuring consistent
stability. performance over time.

3 Low Maintenance
TSR requires minimal maintenance due to the robustness of
its components.
Disadvantages of TSR
Harmonic Distortion Limited Reactive
Power Range
TSR can generate
harmonics, which can TSR has a limited range of
interfere with other reactive power
equipment in the power compensation compared to
system. other SVC types.

High Cost
The cost of TSR can be higher than other SVC types due to the
complexity of its components.
Type 2: Thyristor Switched Capacitor (TSC)

A typical TSC circuit includes a thyristor valve in

series with a capacitor bank.
Explanation: The thyristor switches the capacitor
banks in or out of the system based on the reactive
power demand. Provides capacitive reactive power
in discrete steps. TSC is often paired with TSR to
form a complete SVC system.
Advantages of TSC
1 No harmonic generation (unlike TSR)

2 Reduced Losses
By improving power factor, TSC reduces power
losses in the system.

3 Lower Cost
TSC is generally less expensive than TSR due to the
use of simpler components.
Disadvantages of TSC

1 Limited to capacitive reactive power supply.

2 Complexity increases when

combined with TSR in hybrid system
Applications of SVC

1
Transmission Systems
SVC is used to enhance voltage stability and improve power factor.

2
Distribution Systems
C improves voltage regulation and reduces losses in distribution networks.

3
Industrial Facilities
SVC helps to improve power quality for large industrial facilities.
