Local Government Code
The Local Government Code of 1991 (RA 7160)
doesn't outline specific nutrition projects for
barangays. However, it provides the framework for
barangays to develop such projects by:
Empowering Barangay Councils (Section 17):
Barangay councils have the authority to plan and
implement programs that improve the well-being of
residents, which can include nutrition initiatives.
Highlighting Health and Social Welfare Services
(Section 17): The code emphasizes the importance of
health and social welfare services within barangays.
Nutrition can be seen as an integral part of both
health and social well-being.
Local Government Code
While not explicitly mentioned in the Code, here are
some possible nutrition projects a barangay could
undertake:

• Community Gardens: Barangays could allocate

land or support resident initiatives to establish
community gardens. This promotes access to
fresh, locally-grown produce.

• Nutritional Education Programs: Barangay health

workers or partnered NGOs could conduct
workshops on healthy eating habits, dietary
needs, and meal planning for families.
Local Government Code
• Feeding Programs: Barangays, in partnership with
national programs or NGOs, could establish
feeding programs for vulnerable populations like
children, pregnant women, or elderly residents.
• Malnutrition Monitoring: They could collaborate
with health centers to monitor malnutrition rates
among children and work towards solutions.
• Micronutrient Supplementation: Barangays could
support initiatives to distribute micronutrient
supplements, especially for pregnant women and
children, if deemed necessary by health
professionals.
