Swati Y Bhave: Visiting consultant, Indraprastha Apollo hospital New Delhi, is an internationally known pediatrician and adolescent specialist. She is executive Director of an NGO-Association of adolescent and child care in India (AACCI).She has been the president of Indian academy of pediatrics(IAP) in 2000 and presently holds the post of coordinator in the International Paedtriac Association(IPA).She has also worked as a senior consultant and PG teacher at the Bombay Hospital institute of medical sciences. She has also written many books for the layman

Sunil Saini: He is currently doing research work in the dept of Applied Psychology in Hisar, Haryana and has a lot of research experience on anger and anger related problems. He has published about 40 research papers in national and international journals and has edited a book with Dr. Swati Bhave. He is currently Associate Executive Editor of the journal Indian psychologist.

ANGER:CAUSES, EXPRESSIONS AND TYPES


In the chaotic world of today, day to life situations are filled with a lot of negative emotions leading to anger stress and depression Emotions are very complex in their origins and in their effects. Each emotions has inherently adaptive function, but growing children must learn to modify their emotion expression. Emotions and emotional styles are the building blocks of person s unique, relatively stable and consistent pattern of personality, which dispose him or her to feel think and behave in a particular way There are 2 factors which contribute to anger internal and external factors

Internal factors
Include type of personality, lack of problem solving skills, unpleasant memories , effects of hormones anxiety depression hostility tension agitation problems of the nervous system etc. The presence of a prior negative affect may intensify anger and lower the ability to control self

External factors
Include negative thoughts parental practices , situational and environmental factors(traffic jams, loud noise, social stress) In today s fast growing competitive and technologically advanced life, positive emotions lost their meanings .terrorist activities around the world have threatened humanity and made everyone feel insecure all the time. Many negative emotions especially insecurity and fear can be transformed into the emotion of anger

Anger expression
When does anger occur? Desire, the root of anger arises only when there is an awareness of one s being i.e. I am . This awareness is pleasurable and a human being feels desire cause distress because these desires have selfish motives and are fulfilled with the cost of other s discomfort or suffering According to Hindu mythology, satwa (goodness, knowledge) rajas(activity, passion) and tamas(ignorance, inactivity) are three gunas that determine one s personality and behavior

Anger can be elicited by behaviors of self or others or specific events like given below: This happens when we don't get recognition or acceptance that we think we deserve Anger is also likely to occur when a person believes that his personal rights or codes have been violated People may become violent when they believe that they lose resources that they deserve

Anger inhibition
Inhibition of anger is valuable to change bad habits, to reduce our attention to unwanted thoughts and behaviors or to deal with circumstances that are beyond our control. When anger is inhibited, the individual has not directly dealt with the anger stimulus and consequently may relieve the experience for some time

Anger expression
Expression of anger or grief can decrease one s well being however, researchers are of the view that neither expression nor inhibition makes us better or worse It is seen that men more frequently perpetrate violence on women than vice-versa

Is anger a good emotion?


Anger is a normal reaction and encountered in almost everyday life situations e.g. at home, school in public place, workplace, interpersonal relationships etc It is healthy human emotion. In its healthy form, anger provides a warning signal to the brain that something is wrong and supplies the body with energy in the form of adrenaline to correct the situation

Constant parental fights have adverse effects on children Parenting style and anger generation Child abuse and anger generation Poor emotional bondage in the family Poor anger management in parents

Adolescent anger
They desire to make their own decisions like adults but have not yet acquired the skills nor discipline necessary for effective and appropriate decision-making There are often continuous fights between parents and adolescents in the form of arguments, withdrawal on everyday issues Parental rules and values are challenged or broken. This leads to parental anger and perpetuates anger in adolescents Adolescents engage in a wide range of antisocial activities. These include stealing damaging other s property and setting fires When there is parental interference these people develop negative feelings towards parents, which are slowly displaced in angry outbursts to others

Peers typically replace the family as the center of a young person s socializing and leisure activities Abusing dating relationship is the most frequent problem of adolescence Day by day increasing family conflicts, economic hardship, and other family strains have made a distance between parents and children and children rely more on peers for emotional support

Youth anger
AHA syndrome i.e., anger, hostility and aggression is the leading cause of physical, physiological and psychological problems among people of all ages This is one of the leading causes of today's youth problems This can lead to health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes eating disorders smoking etc Highly impulsive and sensation seeking youth do not consider the future outcome

What happens when you get angry? When anger occurs ,the body goes instantly into a series of mind body reactions involving hormones nervous system and muscles This involves a release of a hormone called adrenaline. Adrenaline increases heart rate and raises the blood pressure This results in shortness of breadth flushing of skin muscle rigidity and tightening in jaw, stomach shoulder and hands

When you feel angry with someone, first find out whether the other person had a genuine mistake. don't simply assume that they want to trouble you Many times there are conflicts due to miscommunication .they can be better solved by calmly approaching to the situation Time management is of essence Accept criticism positively Sleep deficit and deprivation

In today s world, problems of anger, rage aggression and violent outbursts have reached a critical point where they threaten the ethos of modern society and hence need to be effectively managed

My opinion about the book


It s a good book, it provides us useful tips on mastering the art of anger management Its lucid narration and illustrations makes it interesting and effective It contains a lot of unnecessary explanations and lot of similar examples.
