Introduction to

DevOps
Week 1: Overview of
DevOps, Definitions,
Principles, and Evolution
Session Objectives

• By the end of this session, students will:

– Understand the fundamentals of DevOps.
– Learn the historical evolution of DevOps.
– Explore key principles and practices of DevOps.
Overview of DevOps: Definitions

– DevOps is a set of practices that integrates software development

(Dev) and IT operations (Ops).
– It aims to shorten the development lifecycle and provide continuous
delivery with high software quality.
– DevOps emphasizes collaboration, automation, and monitoring.
DevOps Principles

– Collaboration & Communication: Breaking down silos between

teams.
– Automation: Automating repetitive tasks (CI/CD).
– Continuous Improvement: Iterative approach to increase efficiency.
– Measurement & Monitoring: Real-time data collection to make
decisions.
Core DevOps Practices

– Continuous Integration (CI): Merging code changes frequently.

– Continuous Delivery (CD): Ensuring the software can be released
anytime.
– Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Managing infrastructure using code.
– Monitoring & Logging: Real-time application monitoring and
troubleshooting.
Evolution: Waterfall Model

– Linear and sequential development approach.

– Phases: Requirements -> Design -> Development -> Testing ->
Deployment -> Maintenance.
– Challenges: Long cycle times, lack of flexibility, higher failure rates.
Evolution: Agile Methodology

– Iterative approach to software development.

– Focuses on flexibility, customer feedback, and incremental delivery.
– Solves Waterfall issues with speed and flexibility.
Transition from Agile to DevOps

– Agile focuses on development efficiency, DevOps brings operations

into the mix.
– Continuous feedback loops: Development, testing, deployment, and
monitoring.
– DevOps emphasizes communication, collaboration, and shared
ownership.
Interactive Exercise/Discussion

– Question: How has your past experience with Waterfall/Agile

prepared you for DevOps?
– Discuss with your peers how DevOps can solve challenges in
software development and delivery.
Q&A and Recap

– Definitions and core principles of DevOps.

– How DevOps evolved from Waterfall and Agile.
– Practices that make DevOps effective.
