Position – time (distance-time) graphs

Obj: Present the movement of an object using graphs

 A distance-time graph shows how far an object has travelled in a

given time. It is a simple line graph that denotes distance versus
time findings on the graph.

 Distance is plotted on the Y-axis.

 Time is plotted on the X-axis.

 Note: Curved lines on a distance-time graph indicate that the speed

is changing.
Position – time (distance-time)
graphs
Obj: Present the movement of an
object using graphs
Consider the following facts to be able to present the movement of an
object using graph
Obj: Interpret the distance-time graph

In position-time graph we can read:

1- Speed = Slope of the line

2- Time duration of the journey.

3- Distance (displacement)

4- Compare speeds (The steeper the line the more speed it has)

5- Constant or variable speed

Using graphs to summarise
motion
D Distances measured in one direction are ________, and in the other are _______
1.
2. The _______ of an object is its ______ and the ________ of motion.
3. The velocity of an object moving in a straight line is ________ if it is moving in
one direction and ________ if it is moving in the opposite direction.

C v c speed
4. Sketch a velocity-time graph for an object that is:
a) stationary b negative
b) moving in a straight line with constant speed
a t direction
c) moving in a straight line with steadily increasing

A distance-time graph plots the distance an object
travels against the time it takes it to travel.
