Polynomial
Functions
A polynomial function is a special type of
algebraic expression where each term is
constant, a variable, or a product of
constants and variables raised to whole
number exponents.

n represents any whole number

represents any real number
The following are examples of polynomial
functions

f(x) = 15 g(x) = y

d(x) = h(x) = 15 + 2x

m(x) = k(x) = x² + 3x - 1
The following examples are NOT polynomial
functions:

f(x) = 3x⁻² Cannot have a negative exponent

g(x) = x² + 3x½ Cannot have a fractional exponent

k(x) = 5ⁿ The variable cannot be an exponent

g(x) = The variable cannot appear in the

denominator
h(x) = The variable cannot appear in the
radical sign

Important Definitions
If a polynomial function is written with terms
in descending degree, it is written in
standard form.
1
1|Arrange it in standard form.
Important Definitions
The numbers are the coefficients of
the polynomial.
2
2 | What are the coefficients of
the polynomial function?
Important Definitions
The number is the constant term.
3
3 | What is the constant of the
polynomial function?
Important Definitions
, the coefficient with the highest
power, is the leading coefficient, and
the term is the leading term.
4
4 | What is the leading
coefficient and leading term?
Degree of a
term
Degree of a term: the sum of the
exponents in the monomial

6x² has a degree of 2

7x²y has a degree of 3

(because y has an exponent of 1)

a²b³ has a degree of 5

The degree of a polynomial f(x) is the power of
the variable with the highest degree in the term

Determine the degree of each polynomial function:

f(x) = 6x⁴ - 3x² + 4 4th degree LC: 6
g(x) = 3x³ - 2x²y⁵ + x³y² - 4 7th degree LC: -2
h(x) = 4x⁹ - 8x³y⁵ + x³y² + 7 9th degree LC: 4
j(x) = 4x²(9x³ - 10x) 5th degree LC: 36
