N O U N P H RA S E
It can be a single noun/pronoun or a group of words that consists of a noun (or
pronoun) and other words that modify the noun (or pronoun)

Modifiers can be:


- Articles : a, an, the (Det)
- Quantifiers: some, many, a little (Det)
- Demonstratives: this, those (Det)
- Possessives: my, her (Det)
- Adjectives: big, cute (Adj)
- Adverbs: very (Adv) – Note: these do not directly modify nouns; they can modify
adjectives in front of nouns
Examples: Sally, your black cat, a scary movie, a very interesting book
V E R B P H RA S E
According to the most common interpretation, it means either a single verb or a
group of words that consists of a main (head) verb and other verbs such as
copular verbs or auxiliary verbs – it has the function of the verb in a sentence

Examples: was walking, will go, has been singing, work

Note: when we create a syntactic tree diagram, the predicate is seen as a verb
phrase too. This verb phrase often consists of a verb (phrase) and other phrases.
Example: Jason – bought a new lamp.
Jason: Subject (NP)
bought a new lamp: Predicate (VP)

It is a group of words that consists of a preposition and an object.


It may also include modifiers
It functions as an adjective or adverb in the sentence

Examples:
1. The rat ran into the box. (adverb function)
2. You seem under the weather. (adjective function)
A D J E C T I V E P H RA S E

It consists of a single adjective or an adjective and other words that either


modify or complement it

An adjective phrase is used to describe or add more information about a noun


or a pronoun

Example:

1. This film is absolutely hilarious.

2. Jason is very happy.

It consists of an adverb and often other words that modify it

Examples:
1. The sun shines brightly.
2. He very carefully lifted the trophy.
