Presenting and
Interpreting
Data in
Graphical Forms
Explore how to organize and present data
What is
graph? a
A graph is a visual representation of
numerical data.
• Graphs provide a visual way to
summarize complex data and to
show the relationship between
different variables or sets of data.
• Graphs are also an excellent way
to demonstrate trends and
relationships within the data.
By the end of the lesson, you are expected
to:
Identify the different types of graphs;

describe data in graphical form;

and

present and interpret data in graphical

form.
Types of data that we can collect and present into
graphs:

Quantitative data
Qualitative data
(also called categorical expressed as a number that
data) describes a subject, can be analyzed.
and cannot be expressed
as a number.
Bar graphs, line graphs, and pie Histograms are useful for displaying

categorical data.
Types of Graphs
and Charts
Bar graph

• It is composed of discrete
bars that represent
different categories of
data.
• The length or height of
the bar is equal to the
quantity within that
category of data.
• Bar graphs are best used
to compare values across
categories.
Pie Chart
• It is a circular chart
used tocompare
parts of the whole.
• It is divided into
sectors that are
equal in size to the
quantity
represented.
Histogram

• It has connected bars that

display the frequency or
proportion of cases that
fall within defined
intervals or columns.
• The bars on the
histogram can be of
varying width and
typically display
continuous data.
Line graph
• It displays the
relationship
between two types
of information.
• Line graphs are
most effective in
presenting five or
more data points
over a period of
time.
Pictogram

• It is a special type of bar

graph.
• Instead of using an axis
with numbers, it uses
pictures to represent a
particular number of
items.
• For example, you could
use a pictogram for the
data above about ages,
with an image of a person
to show the number of
people in each category:
Scatter plot.
• It is a graph in which
the values of two
variables are plotted
along two axes, the
pattern of the
resulting points
revealing any
correlation present.

Guidelines on how to analyze graphs

• Distinguish between the various types of graphs.

• Read the title and axes of the graphs in order to
determine which type of data is being represented.
• Determine the general trend of the graph.
• Look for data points that do not seem to fit the general
trend.
• Use the graph to make predictions about future sets of
data.
1. Which type of graph has
connected bars that display the
frequency or proportion of cases
that will fall within defined intervals
or columns?
2. Which type of graphs is a
circular chart use to
compare parts of the whole?
3. It is a type of graph were you
can reflect the number of TVL-HE
Dressmaking students versus the
TVL-HE Cookery students in the
last 4 years at Presbitero High
School.
4. It is composed of
discrete bars that
represent different
categories of data.
5. It is a special type of bar
graph that uses pictures to
represent a particular
number of items.
6. It displays the
relationship between two
types of information.
