Introduction
• Computer viruses are a type of software program that,
like a biological virus, reproduces and spreads itself

• Some virus may display only a message on the screen,

others may slow down the Pc

• They can also erase files or even format your floppy or

hard disk and crash the system

History of Computer Virus
1940s-1960s: Early Concepts: The idea of self-replicating programs
emerged with theoretical work in computer science, particularly with
John von Neumann’s self-replicating automata.
1970s: The Creeper Virus: One of the first known viruses, Creeper, was
developed in the early 1970s on the ARPANET. It was a self-replicating
program that displayed the message, "I'm the creeper, catch me if you
can!“.
1980s: The Rise of Viruses: The first true computer virus, called "Elk
Cloner," was created in 1982 by a high school student. It infected Apple
II computers via floppy disks. During this time, various other viruses
began to emerge, infecting DOS systems.
History of Computer Virus
1990s: The Boom of Malware: The proliferation of personal computers led to the spread
of viruses like the "Michelangelo" virus and "ILOVEYOU" worm. This decade saw the rise
of antivirus software as a response to the increasing threats.
2000s: More Sophisticated Threats: Viruses became more sophisticated, with the
introduction of polymorphic and metamorphic viruses. Notable examples include the
"Sasser" worm and "MyDoom" virus, which caused significant damage and prompted
increased cybersecurity awareness.
2010s: Ransomware and Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs):The emergence of
ransomware (like WannaCry) and targeted attacks from nation-state actors marked this
decade. These threats highlighted the need for robust cybersecurity measures.
2020s: Evolving Landscape: Computer viruses continue to evolve, leveraging artificial
intelligence and targeting new platforms, including IoT devices and cloud services. The
threat landscape remains dynamic, requiring constant vigilance and adaptation.

Types of Computer Virus
1. File Infector Viruses;- These attach themselves to executable
files and spread when the infected file is run. Examples include
the CIH (Chernobyl) virus.

2. Macro Viruses:- Often found in documents and spreadsheets,

these viruses exploit macro programming languages. Notable
examples include the Melissa virus.

3. Boot Sector Viruses:- These infect the boot sector of a hard

drive or removable media, loading before the operating system.
Examples include the Stone virus.

4. Polymorphic Viruses:- These can change their code
each time they infect a new file, making them harder to
detect. An example is the Storm Worm.
5. Metamorphic Viruses:- Similar to polymorphic
viruses, but they rewrite their own code completely
while retaining the original functionality, further
complicating detection.
6. Resident Viruses:- These embed themselves in a
computer's memory, allowing them to infect files even
after the original host program has been closed. An
example is the Randex virus.

7. Network Viruses:- These spread across networks, often using
vulnerabilities in software or systems. They can propagate through email or
shared drives.

8. Worms:- Although technically distinct from viruses, worms can self-replicate

and spread without attaching to files. The Conficker worm is a well-known
example.

9. Ransomware:- A type of malware that encrypts a user's files and demands

payment for the decryption key. Examples include WannaCry and Locky.

10. Spyware and Adware:- While not viruses in the traditional sense, these
programs can infect computers to monitor user activity or display unwanted
advertisements.
